Previous Contra hero Bill Rizer is in jail for killing his partner Lance Bean and for killing much of the worlds population when a system designed to help defend against aliens malfunctions and he is blamed.

While in cryoprison a terrorist organization appears and starts wreaking havok. Bill is released to fight this terrorist group and it's leader along with a female cyborg companion.

The gameplay goes back to sidescrolling 2D shooting like most previous contra games. There are a few differences in gameplay however. You no longer collect weapon powerups. Instead you have 3 weapons available at all times and all have secondary functions:

Machine gun: The normal gun with unlimited ammo. Secondary function shoots out a ball that briefly shoots in a circular pattern
Driver mines: Kind of like a grenade launcher. Secondary fire shoots mini missiles that lock onto a target
Flame thrower: Shoots a flame that can destroy some enemy bullets. Secondary fire shoots a beam of fire that is very strong.

Also, you can now lock your weapon into a specific angle and keep moving. On the other hand, you can also keep the character from moving while being able to move the weapon nearly 360 degrees

There are a few areas where you ride vehicles while fighting and sometimes the screen will switch the vertical scrolling on the fly.

A big difference in the game is now the Hit % meter at the top of the screen. Certain items in the stage must be destroyed to increase the meter as well as certain parts of bosses(bosses can be multi-segmented and not all segments need to be take out to kill the boss)

Here is why the Hit % meter matters. You must be over 90% over the first 5 stages to play the final 2 stages. The game has multiple endings because of this and you must have 100% hit rate and a S rank overall(no deaths) to see the final ending

It's hard at first but follows the basic Contra formula of "just memorize when everything happens and where you have to be to survive"

There is a twist ending you might not have seen coming.

I recommend it if you can find a copy. I don't know how hard it is but a year or so after it was released I had to go to 4 or 5 stores just to find a copy.

I honestly don't think any Contra will beat the original, Super C being the closest. Just seems to me with that series everything they added just detracted. It was the basic gameplay and simultaneous action that made it a classic, they should have kept focusing on that.
I think I would give Contra 4 on DS a good review if it wasnt Contra, know what I mean?
