Really, what's the catch?
Nothing. They have a store in game now so it's microtransaction based.
Valve also said sales had dwindled so low after 4 years that they had 3 options:
1)Start building a brand new game
2)Release expansions for a price
3)Rely on the microstransactions and release it free for everyone
They chose 3.

Sad they didn't go with 1. Unless they meant "new" like the console new games, old stuff redone to death.
I'll check it out. I have TF2 on 360 but I hear the PC version is much much better.

Well considering TF1 was released in 96 as a mod, and Team Fortress Classic as a stand alone game in 99 it's not surprising they aren't ready to make a Team Fortress 3.
People still play the crap out of TFC on steam

I hope this means they'll make a new game, like actually new, since they have time to kill before TF3.

Steam accounts are completely free. If you made one through Civ5 you are fine.
You can make one without owning any games that use Steam.

Downloading now, seems like it's gonna take a while. I used to play TF a lot on PC and I've played Orange Box quite a bit. I heard this version has more content though, should be awesome. You play this? If so you can add me and I'll be glad to play some TF2.
Btw I notice Champions Online has Steam achievements, would I be able to sign my existing account to steam and got those or am I out of luck? Wish I would've know before I started playing it.

Some observations:
They nerfed the medic pretty bad from TFC just by taking away his shotgun.
The demoman and pyro seem to be a lot easier to play with.
The Spy is way too user friendly now. I could never kill anyone as a spy in TFC and on my first run as a spy last night I was stabbing people and sapping sentries with ease.
Dudebro
06-25-2011, 01:41 PM
@steven- Pretty sure you can play with the touchpad of a laptop.
@BH- I'll add you tonight. Don't worry about being good, I haven't played in many months and I'm missing shots by miles. The only way I got kills last night was from my sentry gun.
I'm not sure how different those class changes are from the 360 version but either way I bet I'll be fine with it. Btw I used to play Spy constantly in TFC and I used to get tons of kills. They definitely changed how it plays. No more faking death on the ground and no more hallucination grenades. Boo.

Yes it's FPS but it's one of the best ever made. It's got style and a unique feel to it. If you don't like shooting stuff you could play an engineer and build turrets to do it for you. Or be a medic and heal people who do like to shoot stuff. You could even be a scout and just sprint around the map hitting people with your bat.

Whoever rated me down for that post needs mental help. I was sincerely listing some positives about the game in the hopes that more people might be interested. Doing things together as a group is a lot more fun than solo with strangers.
It's pretty telling that Tenser didn't get rated down for his sarcastic comment though.

06-26-2011, 04:07 PM
I meant the motive was telling because my completely normal post got rated down and Tensers wasn't despite his obvious sarcasm. It tells me someone has a problem with me but they're too afraid to say anything about it. If it's just trolling then someone needs to get a life.
But either way it doesn't matter. I got 16k + posts and only 29 rate downs so I'm obviously doing something right.
So back to the topic, this game is awesome. I'm disappointed more of you aren't interested. All you need is an internet connection and you can play one of the best FPS ever made. For anyone who isn't familiar with the series it's very lighthearted and casual friendly. If you're a noob you'll do fine, just point and shoot. If you're good then there's lots of fun stuff to keep you interested and challenged.

I would like to give some advice to anyone wishing to play medic:
1)You can't kill crap, your role is support(I mean don't go looking for combat but by all means defend yourself if necessary)
2) Don't bother healing engineers. They have dispensers around to heal themselves
3) Basically you want to be stuck like glue to either the Heavy, Soldier, or Demoman. A good medic+Heavy combo will absolutely own the opposition.
Dudebro
06-26-2011, 08:38 PM
Medics can be surprisingly good in a fight. That high rate of fire on their gun is annoying and it chips away at your health pretty quickly. Plus people tend to underestimate them and assume they aren't gonna throw down.
As someone who plays engineer a lot I have to disagree. Yeah if you see a hurt medic near his equipment don't bother but if he's in the enemy base or otherwise engaged he'll probably really appreciate that refill. Plus if you're a medic without a tank to heal you might as well use the engineer until one shows up, their shotgun can put people down pretty quick too.
It is pretty hard to kill that combo but if the guy is smart he'll be shooting at the medic first to stop the healing. Don't just stick like glue, hide behind them.

I should have been more specific. Heal anyone who needs it if they're out in the battle. However, I see a lot of medics healing people who don't need it(engineers building close to spawn) or just going about it all wrong.
It was more of a rant because I was playing Heavy out of necessity(I try to assess what the team needs and adapt to that) and the medic would not come with me, just kept healing engineers who were building right outside the spawn and surrounded by dispensers

It was probably someone who's not familiar with the game. Anyone who knows the deal wouldn't be wasting their healing on people who don't need it. Or, could just be the medic was friends with the engineer.
My advice for new people is to not play medic right away. It's very much a support job and it takes a good amount of skill to use effectively. It's like the spy, don't bother if you don't know the game well.
Btw awesome avatar on Steam BH, what's the name of that character again? I know it's from Neverending story but it's been a while.

Btw that was you who joined my game with the name BearHawk right? If so that was cool when I healed you as we steamrolled over the other team. Yeah, that was me. I also was healing you while a pyro was lighting you on fire
I was switching classes a lot based on what I thought the team needed at the time and I even captured the intel as a Heavy with you in tow healing:clap:
Then I found the Eyelander which is basically a giant claymore for the demoman and ran around trying to kill people with it... I got one person...apparently running straight at people with only a claymore as a weapon doesn't work:at-wits-end::q
I also found a Mann Co. Store Crate, but they want me to pay $2.50 for a key to open, not gonna happen.

I have a hard time noticing teammates because I'm too busy shooting them in case they're spies.
Usually I like to switch classes usually but I get stuck on engineer a lot because it's so much fun. I love busting the same spies over and over again. You'd think they'd learn right?
I've seen that broadsword looking thing, never seen it used though. I got a bunch of items tonight but only a couple were good. The best seems to be a crossbow for the medic that shoots healing/damaging bolts depending on who it hits.
I read about the crates and they seem to be worthless. People were saying you'd be lucky if someone traded like 8 crates for a crafting material. If you still got tons of room I guess it can't hurt to hold on to it just in case.

Apparently there are a couple of differences between the "free" and "premium" versions on the game
Free Users(Premium user in quotes)
Backpack: 50 slots(300 slots)
Item drops: Standard(Standard, Rare, & Cosmetic)
Crafting: Limited blueprints(All Blueprints)
Trading: Can only receive trades(Full trading)
Gifting:Can only receive gifts (Give & Receive)
Purchasing anything from the store makes you a premium user.

I'm sure I annoyed him taking out some of his sentries and dispensers. If my team wasn't so stupid I don't think he'd have killed me as much...they just decided to pretend his sentries didn't exist and get us pinned in our base.

YouTube - ‪MC Hammer - U Can't Touch This‬‏
I feel bad though, most of my kills on you were due to revenge criticals. I have the shotgun that gives me a critical hit for every kill my sentry gets, after it's destroyed or I move it. That stacks if I don't die too. At one point I was swimming around with ten criticals waiting, devastating.
Btw when you joined the game earlier and played medic you really broke up our engineer dominance. Up until you backed those guys up they couldn't touch this, for reals. My brother sumostomp was playing engineer with me so we had some good coordination going on. Good job steamrolling us. :(

I knew you had crits ready and waiting. But I was trying to get to your sentries hoping you were not around to make it easier for the team. It appeared I was the only one who even entertained that idea.
As a pyro running through the main entrance is a bit of a risk and the water path is usually easier because then you can ambush people if you make it to the enemy base.
IT didn't hurt there were like 2 heavies for me to fall in behind:pBut then for some reason they all switched classes and stopped attacking. I don't quite understand some people. It's ctf, your kill/death ratio doesn't matter. Someone needs to go in there and weaken defenses but a lot of people don't quite grasp that concept.

Well they did try to stop us with lots of spies but we shut that down fast. One guy even raged in general chat about how we keep detecting him. I just told him "I shoot at everyone" which is true. I also got one guy to quit by doing that mobile sentry thing I was doing to you. He was a heavy and he kept killing me but not my gun, it would finish him. After several times of that he finally raged in chat and left. I felt bad but I laughed.
Seems like a lot of new players because it's free to play. Some servers you can tell most people have been playing a while. I'm new to it but I've got lots of experience from other versions.

I read online some servers are running a script to detect if you are using a free version and keeping you off their servers. That's going just a little too far.
If you've played TFC in the past there really isn't much of a learning curve, other than the maps. there are a few minor differences in how the classes work now but they are quickly learned.
Dudebro
07-05-2011, 12:47 AM
Yeah I read about those elitist servers too, their loss. Anyone who doesn't welcome new players to the game they love is a fool. At the very least it's just easy kills until the newbs learn the ropes.
I used to play TF1 a lot, like way more than I should've. TF2 is the same game but with some tweaks. One thing I hate is how they removed grenades from all the classes except demoman, but I understand why.

Sign into steam and on the top right you should see "Dudebro's Account". Click on it and there should be an option to add funds. They only allow you to add funds in $5 increments to your wallet.
However you can buy games and other things in the store for the exact price. TF2 stuff doesn't work like that since you buy it in game, you need funds in your wallet.

There are some games I am considering buying, so I figured I'd put money into the wallet. Plus $.49 is a pretty good deal for the full version of TF2.
I have a few other friends who have the retail version so when they play it'll be nice to be able to trade unneeded items with them.

Then again I don't think I should give you anything just so you can kill me with it:freaked-out:

It's funny how the drop system works. My brother started a few days after me and he already got some really good stuff. But he still hasn't found anything for the medic. One of my first drops was that medic crossbow and now I have like 4-5 different things for them.
Btw you know the achievement based gear is separate right? Like my engineer is loaded with stuff because of it and each piece came after I got an engineer milestone. Supposedly random drop items can happen every half hour or 45 mins btw.
bearhawk72
07-09-2011, 08:10 PM
I know. At one point I had 4 blutsaugers. I have achievement weapons for the medic, engineer, pyro, and demoman.
There is a limit to how many random drops you can get in a week. I believe it's somewhere between 8 and 12(It resets sometime on Wednesday night)
At first I kept getting scout and spy things despite the fact I hardly ever use them and never used them at first.
When you go premium you can get rarer weapons and hats and other things or so I read.
Dudebro
07-09-2011, 08:22 PM
I read about the limits but some people claim it's not accurate. But I believe because my brother and I both seemed to hit a wall and got no items(besides achievement ones) after playing for hours.
Again the drop system is funny. I got one item for scout and zero for spy from random drops but I actually do play them from time to time.
Btw I'm getting annoyed with one of the achievements. It says to play a complete round with each class, simple enough. But I've been stuck at 8/9 this whole time. It's not a big deal at all but it's annoying because I'm pretty sure I've played each class for a full round. Did you get that one? My brother got it and he said he hasn't even played all of them for a full round and I believe him because he only plays 2fort. :teeth:
@DN- I would love to get a group of RU people together. If we were in the same game we could work together and break the other side. The main problem I'm having now is no coordination with strangers.

Nope, don't have that one. I haven't played a round as scout or sniper yet.
I don't get how you play engineer so well. Whenever I even try my team just get overrun and I'm lucky to get the sentry built at all
Dudebro
07-09-2011, 09:19 PM
I've had lots of practice as engineer. Back in the days of TF1 I used to play it constantly and not a whole lot has changed since then really. It's like riding a bike. It also helps that you only see me playing on 2fort and I know that level like the back of my hand. For some reason everyone loves that map and most play nothing else. When I try other levels people smoke me and I have to switch to other more mobile classes.
If you want a tip I'd say you should play a round as another job and see how things are going. If your team isn't staying in your base at all then it's probably not worth bothering with defensive engineer unless you're prepared to defend against all the spies by yourself(not very fun). If you got some people defending, hopefully a pyro, then you're good to go. Build the gun near your spawn point and move it when it's done. Building it near combat isn't good unless you already have a dispenser waiting.
Also when you get that mini sentry you can go on the offensive like I was doing vs you. It takes like a second to build and only costs 100 metal. When I was doing it I'd destroy it and rebuild it after every kill so the dude couldn't come back and go right for it, as I'm sure you noticed.
bearhawk72
07-10-2011, 12:30 AM
Well that last map kinda sucked. I never played it before but I do not like it.
We had that one good run where we got deep into the enemy base though. As a medic I fully expect to constantly get shanked, it's just the way it is. A few times I saw the spy come out of cloak and stab you but there was really no way to warn you or stop it.
I really hate that spies can cloak now. Sure most of the time you can see them if they move(unless they have the dead ringer) but it's way too easy for them to hide anywhere now and camp high traffic areas.
Dudebro
07-10-2011, 12:51 AM
That map was horrible really. The main bridge is just ridiculously out in the open and it's made worse by the spy issue. I was trying to play safe but in the area you can really be hit from all angles. The rest of the level seems annoying too.
That one run we did good I really stomped on them. Even after you died I was sitting outside their spawn just mowing them down as they came out. I even got the spies a few times as they tried to stab me. Eventually I died because I don't know the level enough to find health. Dominated like three people and I think I earned you a domination too, right? That made up for the 20 or so backstabs they got me with.
bearhawk72
07-10-2011, 12:33 PM

I just watched some videos and some of these games do look like crap.
Forsaken Worlds- Typical cutesy anime themed rpg with annoying characters. It also has strictly limited jobs, like dwarves can only be marksmen(?!). Lame. But for those who like this sort of thing it does look like it has a lot of content considering it's free.
Spiral Knights- Really looks like it's designed for young kids. Made by the people who made puzzle pirates. I have literally zero interest in it.
Alliance of Valliant Arms- Doesn't look like a bad FPS but it's nothing special either. Good for people with no access to other online FPS games but bad when you consider TF2 is also free and it's epic.
Champions Online: Free for All- I know this one is awesome and I have two characters already. If you or anyone wants to try it out I can help you directly or hook you up with currency to buy stuff.
Global Agenda: Free Agent- This one seems interesting. The combat seems to play like Mass Effect(minus the force powers) in a third person perspective with recon class being able to go first person for sniping. The most appealing part is the rpg elements though. It claims to have some pretty good customization options like a large skill tree and different ways to play. I haven't tried it though so it could be a lot of bs.

Man, we were 1 kill away from an achievement for 10 kills with a medic without dying(you may already have it but I don't have the medic equivalent)
We got to 9 and I died
Dudebro
07-12-2011, 12:35 AM
Nope I don't have that yet. I got 9 kills in a row with you healing me and then later I got 12 or 13(I forget when you died during this run). I ended up getting the cycle achievement for killing people while in the air, on the ground and underwater in one life and the one for killing 10 cloaked spies. I was really steamrolling all of them. I hate to brag but I think I'm getting good with the heavy weapons guy. Of course more than half of that success has been due to you and my brother healing me well. I've had some other good medics but mostly they go out and die instead of letting me absorb the damage. Must be new.
I got the sandvich but it doesn't say exactly what it does. I assume it gives back health but I haven't been able to test it yet.
Btw earlier my brother and I were doing really well and at one point we were both dominating most of the other team. I'm not sure what his looked like but I had 4 out of 6 of them dominated at the same time. Heavy+Medic of course.
I just realized we could've probably recorded that replay and shown these guys. I gotta remember to do that next time we stomp the other team.
bearhawk72
07-12-2011, 12:42 AM
Sandvich is a secondary weapon. You eat it to replenish 300 health. While eating you are vulnerable.
You can also drop it to act as a healing device for nearby teammates
Dudebro
07-12-2011, 12:45 AM
Yeah I knew you could be killed while doing the eating animation, I've done it many times. Also the very first time I tested it I stepped out of the spawn and while it was going I saw a spy decloak and slowly kill me. :(
Drop it like dropping flag, L, or with right click? I can test it myself but it's easier atm to just ask you ;)

Flare gun is fun but can be hard to use at times. However, it's instant crit if the person is already on fire.
You can use it ti kill sentries as well but the reload time makes it kind of rough.

Flare gun is also great for long distances, and if that enemy decides to come too close for comfort use the

All primary shotguns that you start off with are the same in all classes. Which include: Pyro, Engineer, Heavy, and Soldier.

Haha, I just got called a spawn camper:angel:
As a pyro I ran into the enemy base on 2fort, killed the engineer building in front of the spawn, proceeded out to the balcony where I killed 2 snipers and chased a 3rd into his spawn and ignited a soldier coming out. For that I got called a spawn camper

@Paul - I figured all the shotguns were the same but I don't like to state things as fact unless I know for sure. So either way, the default shotgun is pretty beast.
I'm attaching a picture of my avatar.
@BH- When I was a heavy and my brother was medic we literally had to do laps around the enemy base so we weren't just standing in front of their spawn. Well we didn't have to but I hate the idea of trapping people in the spawn with no way to fight back. People do it to me all the time and it's lame. I'm good but there's not much you can do when a platoon of dudes are aiming at your door as you step out. Sounds like you did fine though.

Yeah, what do they want me to do? If I run past a spawn and someone comes out, I'm gonna try and take you down. I'm not going to ignore you and let you kill me.
The problem with the spawns on 2fort is their location. Both are in prime areas for enemies to be passing through. Either on the way(one of the ways at least) to the intel, or onto the balcony to kill the snipers to make life easier on your team.
If I get killed by someone as I step out of the spawn, it sucks but so what. As long as the same guy isn't still sitting there when I spawn again I don't have a problem.

Demoman respawn kills at 2Fort all the time. He throws sticky bombs all over the enemies door, and then detonates them once anyone unlucky enough steps out. It's so annoying.

I have no idea how to tell what isn't common in the store. The official TF2 page says premium users can get rare and cosmetic items as drops, though I haven't gotten anything cosmetic and I'm not sure if I have anything rare

No items in the Mann Co. Store are worth buying. The shop is just a way for you to buy things sooner than waiting to find them in game
However, keys are unique, because they let you open crates.

When I first joined your game last night and saw you were a heavy, sumostomp was a medic and I was on the other team I knew I was in trouble:at-wits-end:Luckily teams got scrambled and we ended up on the same team.
Sumostomp is your brother right? And he only plays 2fort? We need to get him to play other maps/modes. One can only play so much 2fort.
Attack/Defend and Capture points can be very hit or miss though. It's rather easy and common on both modes for one team steam roll the other and/or camp their spawn. However I have had pretty epic battles on attack/defend Dustbowl.
Payload I haven't played much, but it's not too bad other than the fact that I don't know the maps as well as I need to.
Payload race I just don't like.

Yeah you got lucky. We were really killing everyone that game. When I finally logged out I had 200 kills, 60 deaths and about 25 dominations. When they scrambled the teams I was actually still on blue and you guys were on red, but I switched asap. Sucked for blue team but I wasn't gonna lose both my medics.;)
Yeah he's my brother and yup he only plays two fort. He's lame like that. I keep telling him he has to play other maps but he doesn't care. Back in the days of TF1 we used to mainly just play the well but now they changed it so much and nobody likes it, a shame.
I'm gonna try to get him to play turbine because it's layout is similar to two fort, baby steps. Then I'll make him try stuff like goldrush which can be a lot of fun. It's nice to have people forced into choke points so you can easily slaughter them.
Honestly I don't care if we lose or get dominated as long as we're not being camped in our spawn. If I can still kill people it's all good.
Payload is what goldrush is right, a train you have to move forward? If so I like that mode a lot.

Yeah, payload is the one where you push a cart or stop the other team from doing it.
Payload race each team has a cart, first to the finish wins. I don't really like that one. Every time I play like 2 guys from the other team push the cart, the rest pin you in your spawn.
I forgot there is King of the Hill as well. I like that mode too though sometimes my comp doesn't like it and starts getting laggy.

Just as a warning I've been messing around with the settings in TF2 a lot trying to clear up some lag so if I join your game and back out a couple times I'm trying to find the best settings.
Also, I have disabled the in game steam messaging because it does cause lag on my end(turning it off helped in other games before)

Some try hard wanna be pro gave me a hard time last night, was amusing. He kept talking trash everytime he killed someone but he never left his fort and he was hardly ever by himself, in other words a camping coward. When I ambushed him he immediately said "You must've been camping there for a while", I wasn't. So I said "Whatever you have to tell yourself". That set him off and he tried to talk more trash to me but I just ignored it and keep playing. I bet he was annoyed, attention whores need that attention.

Thats how it goes. I've suicide rushed you when you were a heavy and had a medic healing you just to see if I can get you
Also, I think it was your brother I was healing yesterday and he was a soldier. I was almost at full ubercharge and we were right at the enemy base...and he rocket jumped onto the balcony leaving me for dead.

It might've been him but if so he didn't mean it. He plays medic a lot and he knows how lame that is. Maybe he thought you were about to be killed and he figured there was nothing he could accomplish by dieing with you? I've done that to some medics. I figure if you play a support job you expect to die a lot anyways, I do.

You really need to get your brother to play payload. I'm really starting to like it(now that I got the framerate issue mostly solved)
It's near constant action. Sure you're probably going to die, and die a lot but it's fun. Either trying to force your way through the enemy defense or keep the enemy off the cart so they can't push it. It requires a lot more strategy than 2fort

Believe me I've been trying. The best I managed was to get him to play Turbine because it's similar to Two Fort. Btw he's not against new maps or anything, he just doesn't wanna spend time learning new layouts and strategies. We've been playing two fort since TF1 so it's familiar(although neither of us really liked it back then).

That's cool. Surprisingly I don't even have medic milestone 1 yet.
Btw I got into a small argument with some dude last night. He was talking trash about FTP players, they ruin the game apparently. I explained to him how new players are good for any community but he insisted I was wrong. I guess he thinks a stagnant population works because he's an elitist fool. He kept saying stuff like "well people who buy the game actually want the game so they'll stick around". Stupid right? Thankfully Valve isn't as short sighted. I think this is one of the most brilliant FTP programs.
I also got into it with some moron who said I wasn't playing engineer right. He didn't like that I wasn't defending the base, I was pwning in the water. After I politely explained that he(or the other 15 people) could switch to engineer if they felt so strongly about it I ended up getting three dominations back to back(literally 1,2,3 it was awesome). I asked him "so what was that about defending?". He didn't reply.
bearhawk72
07-18-2011, 04:33 PM
Haha. I was on a server and there were no medics and someone asked someone switch to medic. So I did. I run around healing everyone and start working with a heavy. Not 5 minutes after I had switched the same guy said "Can we get a medic that actually heals and doesn't hide?"
I didn't feel like arguing with him but apparently because I didn't stick to him specifically, I was a crappy medic. Plus sometimes you have to actually run around and look for people and not find anyone. A medic blindly rushing out of his base with no support is likely a dead one.
Yet about 15 minutes later there were 4 medics on the team now, 3 of them standing outside the spawn in an ubercircle healing each other just to get an achievement. He had no problem with that though...
the elitists don't get one fact. Just because you have bought the game doesn't make you good. In fact I bet there are a lot of F2P players that will roll into a server and dominate these people who like to spout off and act superior.
Dudebro
07-18-2011, 05:28 PM
I was reading the steam TF2 forums and people were complaining about FTP people, specifically medics, when one guy shut them up by reminding them that before FTP it was rare to see people playing medic anyways.
When I play medic I occasionally hear people talking trash to me because I'm not healing them but I ignore it. If I see someone who needs to be healed, and I'm not being shot at, I'll break from my main tank and heal them. If there's enemies around they're on their own.
Btw when I play heavy I toss my sandvich to you medics when I notice your health is 50% or lower. Pay attention for that so it's not wasted.
Elitists are irrational by nature, they can't be reasoned with. Well they can but if they accept reason they stop being elitist.
But yeah that guys bitching about FTP in my game was doing worse than me. I was playing a map I never played before and I wasn't fighting half the time because I was lost. But I was smoking people.

But, if you bought the game, you have more dedication to the game, and more dedication means more skill, right?
What a load of BS.
The problem with the Medic is that it is indeed the weakest class in TF2, and therefore less enjoyable to play as.
I mean its main attribute is to go invulnerable for 8 seconds via Ubercharge, but even then it has to leech onto other players the whole time. Otherwise it goes invulernable on its own without having the ability to use any weapons. So really, I ask you: How useful can that be in a Battlefield?
Had the Medic been given the ability to go invulnerable on its own with the usage of weapons, I think it would've give the medic a huge advantage over many classes.
Do any of you agree? or disagree?
Btw: I'm about to play TF2, and I feel like owning with the Medic.
Dudebro
07-18-2011, 10:47 PM
I don't see them as weak. They're able to team up with most classes and be very powerful. They're full on support class, that's why their guns suck and you can't use them while invincible(because then they wouldn't suck). It's good balance. It makes medics actually stick with another person and heal. Otherwise we'd see medic chains of invincibility. Broken and overpowered.
I prefer that new uber that doesn't go invincible but gives you criticals instead, so powerful.
I'll be playing again in like a half hour. If you're on I'll try to join you.
Like I said before, I'll try to own with the Medic. It didn't go so well at first (It was terrible), but I persevered and did good.

Also, the Eyelander becomes much more useful once you have the Chargin Targe

@Paul- K/D ratio doesn't matter in a game like this. I'm not saying this game isn't serious business but it's more of a run and gun, arcade style FPS. The teamwork thing also lends to more deaths, especially if you're medic. If it helps my brother played an entire game as medic and had zero kills, but I think he was leading the team in points.
Btw if you tried to post pics they didn't work.
Also if you pay attention to the tags of the server you can pick ones with fast or instant respawn. I enjoy those more than waiting 15 seconds to come back.
@BH- Don't be mad but I traded the Eyelander to my brother so he can craft stuff. I just can't get into the demo for some reason and without the charging targe I don't wanna touch melee.
I haven't used the Kritzkreig yet but I honestly prefer it to the invulnerable default. Unless you're ambushing people or hitting a sentry the invulnerability just makes everyone run from you until it runs out. With the uber criticals it's not so obvious(like the other one painting you a whole color) and by the time people realize it they're being peppered with a ton of criticals. It's pretty amazing if used right.

It's not problem at all if you don't wanna give me free stuff. The only reason I ask is because it's hard to accumulate but if you're gonna craft you'll need everything you can get probably.
I'm keeping stuff for each class too even if I don't play them. But if you or my brother need a piece I got I don't mind parting with it, like say the Shotstop for Scout.

Some people are so silly. I occasionally play on my laptop, and I use an xbox controller to avoid the trackpad. I made the mistake of mentioning this to someone who ended up REFUSING TO HEAL ME because I have a 360 controller and am playing a PC game with it like a "scrub" (his words).
Dudebro

Yeah I've heard of that. For some reason some PC players are all elitist about people playing FPS with controllers, even moreso when it's a 360 controller.
I had this happen in Champions Online. I was all excited to find out that it's completely playable with a 360 controller but everyone I talked to, people who are supposed to be my new in game friends, basically mocked it and laughed at the concept. I don't mind the keyboard+mouse for most games but for me this made Champions so much easier to control and enjoy. They didn't care about any of that, it's just lame no matter what. People can be pretty irrationally stupid sometimes.

K/D doesn't matter, I know. I was trying to point out I've never died so much before. In other classes I could have a K/D ratio where kills far exceed deaths.
I'm looking at the pictures right now. Their working for me.
Most respawn times are up to 20 seconds. Finding a server with instant respawn is almost unheard of, at the original maps anyway.

Maybe it's just me but I don't really care about K/D at all. It's nice when it's positive but generally I run out recklessly and it's not worth worrying about. I'm not saying I play mindlessly but I don't care if I get killed.
When I go to edit your post I can see where the pics are but they don't display at all for me. Is anyone else seeing them in his post on page 7?
Not true for two fort. I see quite a few fast/instant spawn servers. I haven't checked for other maps though.

so I crafted the quick fix medi-gun today. It's pretty awesome
+40% heal rate
+25% uber rate
Move at the speed of anything faster you are healing
-Can't overheal
Required a reclaimed metal, mad milk, and kritzkrieg
Dudebro
07-20-2011, 11:57 PM
You like it? I think it's the worst of the three. The invincibility is awesome for obvious reasons and the critical uber is beast if you do it right. Why use the quick fix? Like what's the point of a faster uber if it doesn't do anything dynamic?
Also I think I heard the mad milk is a valuable trade item. Not to rub salt in the wound.
Btw did you notice the new weapons yet? They got some rayguns for soldiers and not everyone is liking it. Seems a little overpowered to me. It's fast, explodes and catches people on fire and I think it can pass through it's first target.

I used it on Turbine and me and a soldier got 3 captures in 5 minutes with it. I twas basically me follow him into the base, uber, kill everything, get flag and return it. By the time we got back to the enemy intel again uber was ready again.
Dudebro
07-21-2011, 12:22 AM
You might be able to turn off the trails and particle effects but I don't know how. Try the TF2 steam forums.
So the uber just increases the healing drastically? Everytime I tried it or someone else did I just saw death instead of charging forward with the uber.
Btw if you like it then we could theoretically have three medics working together with different ubers. On paper that seems like a lethal combo.

I don't usually have a problem, just with that server. The latency shows at 30-45 when I click on it, but I always get booted for a ping over 350.
Meanwhile I can join servers on the other side of the country and have single digit pings.

I've been playing payload a good deal lately. I have a few observations
1) I still hate spies. When you are pushing the cart and the enemy pops up in front of you it's all to common to get shanked(it's a good strategy yes but that doesn't mean I have to like it)
2)Some of the maps seems unbalanced in Red's favor. A couple of the maps (goldrush and another I can't think of right now) have very bad choke points one team can camp and make it nearly impossible for blue to get through.
3)Badwater basin is probably my favorite map for payload. It can be defended well, but blue has a good chance of winning. It really gets hectic right outside the final capture zone. It's more open than the other maps
Dudebro
07-29-2011, 11:44 PM
Goldrush can be bad if the blue team has dead weight or is bad in general. Even a few good people can't save it if the red team is stocked with people who know the map. I've been on both sides of that coin and it's never really fun. But I gotta admit I play hard the whole time even if one team is losing. I'm that dude camping the cart and pushing it back while you're struggling to move a few feet from the spawn. ;)
Yup spies hurt on payload maps for sure. If you don't have a pyro as back up and a smart engineer making teleporters it becomes frustrating fast. Some of those maps have a huge walk to catch up. I think that's one of the main reasons people just play two fort, instant fighting outside your spawn. None of that careful planning and strategy.
Btw I think I really like King of the Hill(the mode, although the show is awesome too). I wish it was free for all but I can understand why it's not considering the Team part of the games title.

That one, can't wait.

TFC goes on sale fairly frequently on Steam if anyone wants it.
Also, there is an alternate TF2 that was made by fans who were none too thrilled with the development of TF2 and the direction they took.
It's called Fortress Forever. I tried to play it once but it looked like the community was rather small.

Dear Valve,
Stop giving me crates. I will not buy a key to unlock your crap. Maybe you should consider dropping keys once in a while.
That is all.

Do people still play TFC at all really? My brother and I might be inclined to get it so we can play the old maps again.
Fortress Forever looks cool but the video looks laggy or maybe the game is just unstable like that.
Btw one guy is named "Jesus saves. Repent. Trust him." That must be ironic, I doubt Jesus would approve of playing murder sims.
I hear you on the crates thing but at least it doesn't count as an item drop from what I read. I just keep them in case someone wants a specific one for trade. Longshot but it's not unheard of.

I don't really know how big the TFC community is anymore.
Reading the steam forums it appears there are still good servers out there, but a lot of servers full of nothing but bots as well.
I'd wait and see if it goes on sale for dirt cheap(which it probably will) so the risk is low

If it's a dollar or two I'd get it probably. But with TF2 being free to play it's really kinda stunning that they would charge at all. Besides being ancient, relatively, I think the game is totally open by this point with people making all kinds of projects off it. I don't see how they can justify charging. Maybe for the courtesy of hosting the servers to play on? The game is over a decade old now so that would make sense I guess.

They still charge for Counter Strike, and it's the second most played game on steam and according to wikipedia it hasn't even been updated since 2003
The main difference is they make money off TF2 from the store, TFC doesn't have an in game store so they still need to charge for it

What's the number one played, TF2?
Not that I don't believe you but where did you read that stat? I skimmed a couple pages and didn't see it. I'm interested in seeing what else is on there.
I just figured they could cover the cost of hosting an old game since the sequel has been wildly popular for years. Not a big deal either way just saying.
You ever play CS? I remember playing it back when it was just a mod of TF. It was great but we preferred the class system of TF. Oddly enough one of my other favorite games is based of the CS engine(including the buy system), Shadowrun.
Btw do you know the name of the military mod they used to have around the same time? I'm just wondering if it went on to be something good too.

Did it launch with the title "Team Fortress Classic"? It seem like that would be a stupid name.
It looks less cartoony:

I played CS back in college when it was maybe 1 year old. I was never good at it and didn't really like it much
The military mod you are thinking of is probably Day of Defeat. It's WW2 based. I have that one as well.
Also, there are 2 versions of CS and Day of Defeat. The old ones and newer ones based on the Source Engine(Half Life 2 engine)

@DM- TF was first a just a mod for Quake that was released with Half Life. It caught on so well that they decided to make a retail version. Counter strike spawned as a mod of TF. It's a pretty cool evolution I think.
I like the old skins too but the new ones fit the humor of the game. It's not too cartoony imo. At least it's not anime.
Btw it's cool to see the original skins again. I remember those vividly. I think the first Pyro design looked the most intimidating of the three. Like he spray painted a few trash bags red and made a suit out of it.
I just remembered the medic used to be able to poison enemies and it would spread to other enemies. I miss stuff like that.
@DTBS2- I get it now thanks.

Any normal gamer does. But sadly there's a large group of gamers who think all's fair if there's the option to do it. But at least Valve cares about it and they try to fight them. So far I've had no issues with this in TF2.

Mine couldn't handle Portal, I hadn't even gotten the Portal gun yet when it froze.

Of course, ESoD is a danmaku, where there is generally a lot going on, so many bullets. So, that isn't a good check.
If it couldn't handle the opening of Portal, where pretty much nothing happens, it probably wouldn't be able to handle TF2, where a lot is happening.

What makes it worse, the pyro who is the class most suited to stop someone charging at them is at a disadvantage because the shields reduce fire damage:
Chargin Targe: 50% resistance to fire damage
Splendid Screen: 25% fire resistance
Dudebro
07-31-2011, 02:06 PM
I mainly don't like how some set ups make them able to one hit kill and regain full health upon kill. This is supposed to be a shooting game and a demo charging through a crowd of people ruins the flow imo. At least in Shadowrun it's balanced. You have to surprise people with the katana or you'll be picked off at range.
Blue Shoe 2

To be fair, its not as easy as it looks. A pyros compressed air can negate a charge, and the eyelander takes away 25 health and stops random crits.

True, but so can be long range huntsman, backburner surprises, sentries in the intel room, long range flaregun shots, sandman stuns, Natascha attacks, scouts beating you down while you're munching on a sandvich, sniper nests, sticky traps, Half-Zatoichi one-shots, ubered enemies, and smart spies. ANYTHING in the game can be seen in a bad light. to add further emphasis on my point,

I'm just taking issue with the overpowered feeling of that melee. I have lots of practice dealing with melee in a FPS from SR but TF2 takes it a step further and seems to emphasis the demoknight thing too much.

True, but they can be easily countered. Melee weapons and demoknights have one major disadvantage; the range. keep your eyes peeled and you'll be a-ok.
It all depends on the situation, that really decides how overpowered something is.

I do kill my share of demoknights but it's the ones I don't that bother me, obviously. The part about them getting health back and/or speed/attack power for kills makes it seem unbalanced. How am I supposed to fight that if I'm an engineer or medic for example?

With a gun. (sorry, couldn't resist. :snicker:)
Also, only the Half-Zatoichi restores health. when you equip that, however, you cannot change weapons until you get a kill.

Plus other users of that sword can one-hit-kill you.
*edit* and the weapon the "Ullapool Caber" is insanely great. It's a grenade (!) that you can beat people with. it explodes (!) when you hit someone with it. afterwards, it is already exploded... so it doesn't really do much. To quote the description of the weapon "High-yield Scottish face removal.

Any hints and tips for players? I only recently got back into FPS with Old school doom and My copy of Halo so.. any help or suggestions?
1)Spy check everyone. If nothing happens they are not a spy. If they are a spy they will bleed or get ignited
2)Easiest classes to start playing with are probably Soldier and Heavy. Playing medic can be useful for learning maps. Latch onto a heavy and just keep following him while healing
3)You will hate spies. They can be invisible. If you see someone on your team with your name, it's a spy. Kill them. It's useful to let your team know if there is a spy about, and if they have disguised as you
4)Pyro is fairly easy to use, but is an up close and personal class. Try to ambush people if necessary. Use the alt fire of the flamethrower to reflect rockets, sticky bombs, pipe bombs, and arrows back at whoever shot them. Also use it if enemies get too close in a group
5)For King of the Hill and some control point maps, you can dominate with a Demoman if you just find cover and pepper the point with pipe bombs. Sticky bombs also work well. You can lay them and detonate them with mouse 2 no matter what weapon you are using, they disappear when you die.
6)Sniper, scout, spy, and engineer take some patience and practice to use well.
