Conference Summary:

Legend of Zelda 25th Anniversay
Skyward Sword
Four Swords Adventures free for DSi
Mario Kart 3DS
Star Fox 64 3D
Kid Icarus Uprising
Various third party 3DS games (Resident Evil, Cave Story, Metal Gear Solid 3, etc)
Wii U controller (console not shown at conference)

Personal scorecard from here: (http://retrouprising.com/other/chat/pre-e3-hopes-speculations/t11831/p2/#post187652)

Two things at this conference: 3DS games and new console. Wii and DS are largely over and forgotten. - RIGHT

-Focus on upcoming first party 3DS games: Star Fox, Zelda, Kid Icarus. - RIGHT

-Talk about some third party 3DS games: Resident Evil, Cave Story, probably a casual game like Brain Age or something, others? - RIGHT

-Unveiling of 3DS shop/features -WRONG

-New console reveal and description -RIGHT (mostly, controller only)

-Promo video starring Iwata and Miyamoto -RIGHT =P

-Maybe 20 minutes dedicated to the last Wii/DS games: 10 minutes to Skyward Sword, 10 minutes to the two Kirby games. Probably less. -KINDA RIGHT, the "probably less" part was true, no mention of Kirby

-95% of no mention of Last Story, Xenogears, Pandora's Tower localization outside of Japan. -RIGHT

Mostly spot on with my guesses :p.

Personal Thoughts
They wasted too much time talking about non-games, especially at the start with Zelda. Miyamoto really should learn english like Iwata does, his and the translator's voice overallped a lot >_>.

Kinda ok show, but not enough time talking about the games. Also, they should have shown that console thing also, I thought the controller they showed was just another Wii peripheral -_-;.

I'm excited about these games :) I'll probably get them all when they come out if not most of them. Not too crazy about the new console, mostly because I'm not sure exactly what it is lol.

Four Swords Adventures free for DSi - if GCN version sweet, I loved it.

I'm with you on that one! :victory:

So anything about Paper Mario 3DS revealed? :p

So anything about Paper Mario 3DS revealed? :p

The conference is only for the biggest announcements, but the show doesn't end there. There will probably be a lot more things shown off at the demo halls. For continuing coverage you can go to other game sites (1up, IGN, Gamespot, others) and Tenser might post Nintendo articles if he feels like it.

Maybe Miyamoto did forget it in Japan. So there was no footage of any games at all? And is U the name of the controller or the console?

Was blown away, that's all I can say to put it simply. All the possibilities the new console brings are just limitless. It will probably be a console loaded with shovel ware again unfortunately. I can look past that though, third parties are always cashing in bad games on gimmicks as well as on regular consoles, not a smuch though imo.

For the moment, I'm only interested in the 3ds stuff however. I have high hopes for that as well.

I'm wondering if it's intentional to buy the usual 4 controllers because the cost of those things must be insane. Since they showed other players playing with wii motes, maybe not? Either way that means 5-player games which is kind of cool.

Steven, your video helped explain it better.

The example uses from the video
1. Play the game on the controller instead of the TV.
2. Draw.
3. Use it in baseball to aim your pitch and catch the ball - kind of a personalized picture in picture thing.
4. Use it to project an image of your golf ball on the ground while you swing a Wii Wand as a club.
5. Play your game portably without a TV.
6. Use it as a scope.
7. Project an image of a throwing star on it and slide your hand across it to throw them.
8. Video calls.
9. Surf the web.
10. Send you tube videos from controller to tv.
11. Aditional content such as maps can be listed on your controller.

My opinion of their examples (sorry for the negativity)
1. Why did you buy a console if you wanted a handheld. If this is an important feature then it would be better done as an add on for the DS than embeded into the controller. Or by buying a second tv. They repeated this example a couple times. Always, if that is what you wanted then use your phone or your DS, not your console.
2. Ok Picaso, how much fun can you have playing Mario Paint and Color a Dinosaur. If you want to seriously do digital drawing then use a PC with a digital pen, you will get much better results.
3. I'm not sure what I think about this. I can see it possibly being put to good use or possibly being gimmicky. I still think special an add on for the ds for the few times you will use this feature would have been a better than a permenant screen in the controller.
4. Gimmicky. Cann't you just use your imagination and pretend you see your golf ball on the ground. Or just put a real golf ball down there. Adds nothing to the game.
5. Again, that is what a handheld like a DS or a phone is for, not your console.
6. This is just a repeat of number 3.
7. How long are you going to have fun doing that. Why do you need the image projected on the controller, you aren't even looking at it. You are looking at the screen. Seems very bulky. If that is something that looks fun (which it is not) then couldn't they just have a small normal size controller that could detect slidding on the back of it without a screen instead of this.
8. If you want this feature then by an Android phone or a web cam. Your does not need to compete with your phone.
9. Seriously, are you going to be surfing the web on your game controller. Is it worth that big screen on your controller while you are playing games just so you have this option the one or two times when it might be convienent.
10. I imagine they will exploit this idea a lot by putting lots of menus on the controller and treating it as a fancy tv remote control. An Android phone will do this type of stuff better.
11. How often will this be handy? How difficult is it to bring up a map screen or an overlay or an image in a corner. I can see it being good in two player games when you need secrets such as calling a play in football games but there are already pretty good solutions for that without a bulky expensive controller.

All of those option might make a good commercial but none of them are very practical and all are gimmicky. Gimmicks get old fast.

The video did make it look like you can use standard Wii controls which is good. I was wondering if that would be an option.

Decent points Kong, however your missing the point. This is not the Wii U, this is just the controller. If they want to include a ton neat features, then why not. This is all on top of simply being a functional controller.

Dudebro
06-07-2011, 05:05 PM
If this was being made by MS or Sony the tone in this topic would be much different.

That tech demo was very unimpressive. It's like a hi res trailer for any normal game coming out. I say normal because it's not above average.

The only cool thing about the new controller is the ability to switch from TV to controller and keep playing. But even that isn't a big deal really. I would just wait to play it on a real screen rather than play it like a big goofy gameboy.

The price point of the system will be competitive to the current prices of the PS3, 360 in terms of valueWhich most likely means it will cost more but they will market it as a good value to offset the cost.
The games shown for Wii U at the show were actually PS3 and 360 versions but the Wii U will look the same or betterI'll curious how true this will be. So far the videos they did show looked like PS3/xbox360 games from a year or two ago. Nothing impressed me so far.

Also, what Kong said.

This is all on top of simply being a functional controller. That is exactly my point, it is NOT a functional controller.

Would you call the Jaguar controller functional? If not then I think it is a very far fan boy stretch to say the we you gimmicks sit on top of a functional controller.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/83/Atari_jaguar_controller.jpg

... ....The games shown for Wii U at the show were actually PS3 and 360 versions but the Wii U will look the same or better ... ..I don't think it is a very strong move to demo your games on your 5 year old competition.

... ....The price point of the system will be competitive to the current prices of the PS3, 360 in terms of value ... ..That is a very fishy sentence. "In terms of value"?

Nintendo's official info release about the new machine.

Launches: 2012
Size: Approximately 1.8 inches tall, 6.8 inches wide and 10.5 inches long.
New Controller: The new controller incorporates a 6.2-inch, 16:9 touch screen and traditional button controls, including two analog Circle Pads. This combination removes the traditional barriers between games, players and the TV by creating a second window into the video game world. The rechargeable controller includes a Power button, Home button, +Control Pad, A/B/X/Y buttons, L/R buttons and ZL/ZR buttons. It includes a built-in accelerometer and gyroscope, rumble feature, camera, a microphone, stereo speakers, a sensor strip and a stylus.
Other Controls: Up to four Wii Remote™ (or Wii Remote Plus) controllers can be connected at once. The new console supports all Wii™ controllers and input devices, including the Nunchuk™ controller, Classic ControllerTM, Classic Controller ProTM and Wii Balance Board™.
Media: A single self-loading media bay will play 12-centimeter proprietary high-density optical discs for the new console, as well as 12-centimeter Wii optical discs.
Video Output: Supports 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i. Compatible cables include HDMI, component, S-video and composite.
Audio Output: Uses AV Multi Out connector. Six-channel PCM linear output through HDMI.
Storage: The console will have internal flash memory, as well as the option to expand its memory using either an SD memory card or an external USB hard disk drive.
CPU: IBM Power [PC?] ®-based multi-core microprocessor.
Other: Four USB 2.0 connector slots are included. The new console is backward compatible with Wii games and Wii accessories.

The console (http://e3.nintendo.com/_ui/img/hw/playstyle/hardware/1.jpg)

Compatibility - I'm assuming that it will be Gamecube compatible as well even if it's not mentioned (still PowerPC architecture).
Flash memory - This thing had better have a boatload of flash, and no limits on download filesizes on the online shops.
Media - I knew they wouldn't make it use Blu-Ray discs.

Maybe if GC games still work they'll have a port for the controllers? Doubt it but anythings possible.

If it supports GC games then it will have to have the GC ports, the Wii controllers don't have enough buttons and that tablet controller would be a horrendous monster to control GC games with. GC games can't recognize the Wii remotes anyways (no Bluetooth hardware on GC). Unless Nintendo wants to do software emulation to hack in support (please don't, please) which is pointless since the CPU is still PowerPC.
I'm a little concerned on this because assuming the GC ports are under that cover in the picture, that is a small space to cram in 4 GC ports and 4 USB ports. Then again there are no pictures of the top and side views yet. Wait and see I guess.

No GC controllers is lame, I agree, but I definitely saw it coming. Not really a surprise...

I was looking at a list of 3ds games coming and stumbled upon a few cool things like a contra game and yet another Donkey Kong game. It was just called Donkey Kong 3d so I'd imagine it may be another 3d game?

these were both TBA 2012 I believe and they were on Wikipedia so who knows.

Well, is it really so terrible? About GC I mean. That's technically 2 generations ago and double-backwards compatibility is something that never seems to really exist, and if it does, they remove it (ps3, kind of a weird case there actually). Besides, anyone that wants to play gc games can hang on to their GC and/or wii, right? I still am on board though, if it's simple enough to do, then why remove GC?

Well, is it really so terrible? About GC I mean. That's technically 2 generations ago and double-backwards compatibility is something that never seems to really exist

In the past the physical media changed between each system (different cartridge type) as well as completely different processor designs. Not so anymore, everything is optical disc based. And double not so with the GC/Wii/U systems, they are all PowerPC based hardware, using Nintendo's custom optical disc format.

and if it does, they remove it (ps3, kind of a weird case there actually)

All PS3s play PS1 games. All of them. PS2 games are the issue with some system, but it is STILL possible to buy one at stores.

Besides, anyone that wants to play gc games can hang on to their GC and/or wii, right?

Of course, but it's annoying have to have multiple compatible consoles that can play the mostly the same games on the same TV.

I still am on board though, if it's simple enough to do, then why remove GC?

It's just cost, they'd have to add the ports, whatever mechanism to take the small GC discs, the GC BIOS somewhere, maybe other things.

To be clear I'm not ultra mad about this, there is no benefit for Nintendo to keep supporting GC. It was the same story when they dropped GB/C support on the DS and later removed the GBA slot on the DSi and up even those systems could play the old games. But this should have been every easy to implement anyways, and it would have been a great thing because the GC has a far better library than the Wii ever will have.

Kugyince
06-10-2011, 08:19 AM
My guess is that they're hoping to charge you for Gamecube VC content.

The only benefit of that being is that if GC is available on the VC, Dreamcast might be as well.

No argument there. Didn't enjoy much the wii had to offer either. It's kind of to be expected though. When I said the PS3 was a weird case now, I meant it was because it was double-backwards compatible, yet not backwards compatible, and thus its compatibility level was still to only one other console. Kind of hard to explain what I mean.

I kind of doubt any console will support the whole double-backward compatibility thing since there really isn't much for them to gain in that sense besides what, people selling their GC's? That doesn't really effect Nintendo either way as far as I know.

My guess is that they're hoping to charge you for Gamecube VC content.

The only benefit of that being is that if GC is available on the VC, Dreamcast might be as well.

That would be kind of cool being that it's hard to come across the games you want and gamecube emulation isn't possible unless you have a 64bit pc (yes, I tried on a 32bit vista).

Dreamcast? Well, if they're supporting disc media, I don't see why it wouldn't happen. They are already doing SMS, Genesis, and now apparently Game Gear.

Personally I think nintendo might make more off a VC with consoles like Dreamcast & Gamecube offering their games for download, since like I said, emulation for those is difficult (at least, so I've heard for DC, haven't tried)
