I'm going to gamestop at midnight tonight to pick this up on preorder so I figured I should make a topic now while I have nothing to do but sit here and wait.

First things first. This is not a game for everyone. It's set in the 1940s with an emphasis on being a detective. It's trying to capture the appeal of those old movies and so far it seems like it will deliver. If you don't like any of those things then don't bother.

YouTube - LA Noire: Gameplay Video Trailer

It's made by a relatively unheard of company(at least to me) but it's being backed by Rockstar. I know some people wanna lump anything they touch in with senseless violence but one look at the trailer should tell you it's far from a typical GTA game.

I was on the fence when I first heard about it but after watching gameplay trailers and reading about it I'm on board. Early reviews seem to be glowing so that's a bonus. Anyone else getting it at some point?

Looks really good DB. I might try it on the wife's 360.

I might look into it after a price drop. I almost never buy games at full price, especially when they cost $60

It does look good. But I wonder how good the replay value is. Seems to me that once you finish it, the next time won't be as good.

Dudebro

I worry about the replay too but supposedly they thought of that and you can play through the game differently several times. I dunno about that but it could be true.

It would be great if you had a few different characters you could select from, each with their own unique story.

Kugyince

I never base my purchases off of replay value so that wont affect my decision. Hell, I paid $30 for Monster Tale which is a 9 hour game with zero replay value. :p

Dudebro

Yeah honestly it's not a deal breaker for me but it'd be nice if you could play it more than once. Either way I'll probably beat it and trade it in towards another game like the new Elder Scrolls game when that comes out(it looks awesome).

I'm not too interested in playing it, but THAT is what every trailer should be like.

Kugyince

It is an excellent trailer.

I usually don't care for realism in my gaming but the 1940's/50's is one of my favorite settings.

I am totally pumped about this one, unfortunately, I'm not buying any game in the near future. I'll end up gameflying it at some point. The first thought that came to mind when I first heard about this game was an awesome movie called L.A. Confidential.

The motion capture tech looks amazing.

Dudebro

You don't see many good trailers anymore. Now they just show you hi res cinematics instead of gameplay. The only other one I liked in recent history was Shadowrun because it uses all gameplay and manages to tell a story. I know it psyched me up to play it.

YouTube - Shadowrun - Xbox 360

Graphics are dated but it came out in 07 and even then it wasn't top of the line.

joz
05-16-2011, 10:10 PM
That looks like an interesting game. I've heard you talk about Shadowrun but I never bothered to look for a trailer or anything on it since I probably won't play it anytime soon due to a lack of hardware.

Dudebro
05-16-2011, 10:16 PM
If you don't have a 360 it's also for PC. Since it wasn't that tech heavy in 07 it should be pretty easy by todays standards. Also it's probably like 10 bucks.

Will a laptop work okay with it? Also, would you recommend a controller and head set to play it?

Dudebro
05-17-2011, 12:57 AM
Not sure about a laptop unless it's able to run other games. SR is no Oblivion but it will take some power to run.
Atm a headset is mostly pointless because PC can't communicate with 360 players. There's PC players out there but I only know a few personally. I think a controller would be better but I've become so used to it. I used to swear by a keyboard for FPS games back when I played Half Life.

But I don't wanna derail my own topic even though the derail is so awesome.

So far so good. I'm not playing it yet but from I've seen it's like no other game I've played before. But I haven't really played any game like this since Deja Vu and that doesn't really compare.

DB:
But I haven't really played any game like this since Deja Vu and that doesn't really compare.
Now there's a title that should be revived - and redo Shadowgate and Uninvited while you're at it too!

How can you say it doesn't compare?
Deja Vu is all about problem solving, deductive reasoning and critical thinking skills.
Ok I know it's kind of dated and limited compared to the capacity of the new consoles and PCs' but I think you know what I mean.

Deja Vu (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/1003/) » Nintendo (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/nintendo/)
Shadowgate (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/3499/) » Nintendo (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/nintendo/)
Uninvited (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/4441/) » Nintendo (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/nintendo/)

I think they're really fun and unusual games.

A friend of mine got this game at launch. He won't stop talking about it, so it must be at least good. At the point he's at, he is a homicide detective, I'm told you start out in traffic.
Oh, he tells me there is jazz music, which makes it seem even better.
I wish I could play this game...

Dudebro
05-19-2011, 10:31 PM
Actually you start out as a patrol cop, then traffic, then homocide and then I think arson. I'm only at traffic still.

It is really cool but I just worry that some people will get the wrong idea about it being like GTA and find out it's less action and heavy on story and npc interactions. Not for the ADD crowd.

Which means it'll probably go down as one of those games that was great and no one seemed to have played

And when Modern Warfare 3 comes out in November it'll sell more copies day 1 than LA Noire probably will in total

Dudebro
05-19-2011, 10:38 PM
Well so far I've heard it's doing pretty well. It did catch a bunch of people by surprise though and they bitched and moaned on the forums about it but I think all the smart gamers did their research and they're happy with it.

It is one of the expenses I wish I could afford...I'm so amped to play this game. @DB...I trust you and all, but please drop spoiler boxes if you are going to post stuff about the game.

Dudebro
05-20-2011, 02:00 AM
I'm pretty conscious of spoilers usually but I gotta admit I probably would've slipped up because I'm used to people on RU never playing the games I talk about. Sad as that is. But either way I'm already used to walking on eggshells about this game because my wife has her own save and I don't wanna spoil it for her.

I got it. I think I'm at the same stage as DB, traffic cop. I've noticed that there seems to be a lot of crime that can only be solved through death...

This game looks pretty badass to me. I love detective games like the old Police Quest series and I love GTA games. Combining the two in such a cool time period sounds like a winner.

I watched a couple of gameplay videos on Youtube and it seems to play very similar to GTA. The big difference seems to be that their isn't as much "free roaming" that you can do in GTA games, but that doesn't really concern me. I have always been about progressing in the game and completing missions.

Dudebro
05-20-2011, 03:28 PM
If you don't care about free roam and going on rampages killing innocent people then you just might like this game. But that being said you can still drive down the sidewalks and mow people down if you get the urge. They're really good at dodging a speeding car but if you zig zag back and forth they get confused.

Squall
05-20-2011, 03:53 PM
How you drive affects things later on apparently, so I've been trying not to kill too many innocents, but it's hard when you're speeding down the road, sirens blaring, and a pedestrian just stops right in front of you!

Dudebro
05-20-2011, 04:33 PM
Hmm I didn't know your driving would effect anything in a serious way. I know at the end of a case it tallies up your damage done but I never saw anything come of that. Btw there's an achievement for getting like 10,000$ worth of damage.

Squall
05-20-2011, 04:42 PM
I saw that - I've been tempted to get it, but maybe in a second playthrough ;)

Dudebro
05-20-2011, 05:18 PM
Just do it if you wanna. I doubt it will really effect your gameplay in any significant way. Just blow through town smashing into everything in sight(minus people since you'll be saving it probably). When your car catches on fire, take a new one. This will also help if you wanna get the achievement for getting in all the different cars in the game(think there's like 90?).

Squall
05-20-2011, 05:35 PM
Something like that. I kinda want to keep the car your given though so's I can get the street crime... I want to get the achievement for that too!

Dudebro
05-20-2011, 05:38 PM
As far as I know you can get the street crime calls in any police car, because they have police radio. Actually if I remember right even the coroners car does.

Squall
05-20-2011, 05:46 PM
Does it? I thought it was only police cars... I do plan on getting all 90-odd cars though - somehow! All you have to do is sit in it for it to count.

Dudebro
05-20-2011, 05:50 PM
In games like this I like to test the limits. So on my first case I jumped in the meat wagon and burned rubber past all the cops and onlookers. It was amusing to me. Pretty sure the coroner needs a radio to know where to show up so it makes sense.

Squall
05-20-2011, 05:55 PM
Yeah, I suppose... I'm just used to having to do the most tedious things to get some of the goodies these days!

Dudebro
05-20-2011, 06:05 PM
Sometimes you gotta fight for your goodies! They want you to sit in every car in the game? Steal them! They want you to get 10,000$ worth of damage? Drive like you're drunk!

Squall
05-20-2011, 06:29 PM
Go tell that to Kojima and his dog tags! :p

I've played more than enough GTA to know that! :p

My friend won't stop talking about L.A. Noire, I suspect he does nothing but play this game from arriving to his house to him getting too tired to play anymore, that is until he's almost fallen asleep.
He's at Vice Cop now, I don't even understand a single thing he tells me, he talks about it like everyone in the universe has already played it, beat it and gotten 100%, and he's the last person to even start the game.
Come to think about it, he talks about everything like that. He's already ruined Heavy Rain and MGS4 for me, even though I don't even have a PS3. I forgot what he told me about Heavy Rain, so I'd be able to play through it without the plot being no fun.

Dudebro
05-21-2011, 03:01 PM
I have to tune out the game being played in the other room. It sucks because I usually hear just enough to spoil something for myself.

Squall
05-21-2011, 04:28 PM
Yeah, I hate when people do that, but only if it's a game I'd want to play or that the story is a compelling feature (i.e. I wouldn't mind someone ruining Prinny for me! :p ) but othertimes I'll just let someone talk about it.

I'm on Homicide now, partnered up with some old fart -_-

Dudebro
05-21-2011, 04:31 PM
Yeah that's where I left off. I have to be in the right mood to play this game so I might not play it for a few days. Remember, if you wanna post spoilers use the tags!

Dudebro

So that's the studio who did that kids movie Happy Feet and they're working on a Mad Max video game(but it's a movie tie in :( ). I just read that some ex Bondi devs are already working there and their ex boss being a potential employee is causing some tension. Not a good start.
