Forum picture posting safety

Hi guys, I almost got my computer ruined today while trying to post the material safety data sheet for Sodium Fluoride.:beat-up:

What I did was to use Google 'images' to find it, and apparently this mode does not provide the protection their regular web search does, as seen by the small green check marks beside listed web pages.

The bottom line is that I want to warn you guys to always be careful when looking for pictures to post.
IN a way I must thank DB for his inspiration to create this thread, he had been joking in another thread and said something about 'the dangers of hotlinking' when someone's picture failed.

There truly is danger in hotlinking, so please be careful.
For your information, AVG saved my computer :worship: while Norton let the threat right in.:curse:

Funny I was thinking of something like this recently. The other day I clicked on an image and it immediately gave me the fake- YOUR PC IS INFECTED! RUNNING VIRUS SCAN NOW! - crap but closed it right away. I did a couple scans in safe mode to be sure but it seems like I dodged that malware bullet.

First of all I would like to thank you directly for bringing it up; sometimes all it takes is someone to mention something to inspire ideas in others.

In this instant it was a real 'bullet' that I dodged.
Here's the part that bothers me about it:

Norton is the default anti virus program that came installed on the computer when I got it..
AVG is the free version that I got from MajorGeeks.

Norton allowed the intruder in, while AVG stopped it dead and gave me a warning message about the page on my screen.
What's wrong with this picture?

I left Norton behind years ago. Bloatware and it seemed to miss things regularly. You are right that you are not getting your moneys' worth with that program. :p

I've been using Micosoft Security Essentials and so far I am very pleased. Haven't had any problems with it.

I've been using Microsoft Security Essentials and so far I am very pleased. Haven't had any problems with it.

I use the same had no problem yet although I do update it everytime I start my computer it is the first thing I do. I just installed it on our work computer and it found over 300 virus on it that Macafee did not

I used Avast on Laptop (imo better than AVG and no issues with crashing computers via windows update) and Nos on desktop.

Because MS Removal Tool is a malware program that fakes being a Windows anti-virus thing. It basically cancels all commands, will change your desktop and such to make you think you have a ton of viruses in the hope that you will fork over your credit card into to purchase the "fake" anti virus program.

I just run Norton's as a catch all, and about once a month, I'll run Malwarebytes in Safe Mode to catch the occasional bad boy that slips through.
