Sold my DS, got a PSP

So I sold all of my seldom-used-at-this-point DS games to buy a PSP and pre-order Dissidia 012. (I'm not really a fan boy of Sony or Nintendo, recently I just realized how much I don't care for the DS at all. That being said, I like to troll occasionally, so I'm hoping this really sticks it to Tenser and Jim)

So far I plan on just playing Dissidia on Tuesday meaning I have no games for the system at the moment.

Before you begin pirating PSP games, tell me the model of your PSP, if it was a PSP Go or a PSP 3000, you can't do much. If not, then there is a specific motherboard of the PSP 2000 that doesn't work for piracy. Also, if you are going for Dissidia 012, you need the the latest official firmware, so you can't really have CFW and still play it, save for temporary CFW that has been built off of the latest official firmware.


Oh, people have signed various emulators to work on official firmware, so you can get emulators for SNES, NES, Genesis and all sorts of things.

You can still get emulators though, that was the whole reason I got custom firmware, I wanted emulators, because at the time I only had a crappy 32 MB memory stick.

Actually, I'm not a fan of handhelds period. I had a PSP at one point. Sold it when I realized that I didn't touch in in 6 months and it was just collecting dust.

At the moment I'm just waiting for Dissidia, though I have been thinking of getting the port of Grand Theft Auto as well as the remake of Final Fantasy II. Recently I've chosen to be a thrift gamer and buy games when they become cheap, so I'll get em as I see em.

To break into it, I typed this on my PSP. Not too useful in the grand scheme of things.

Yo, DN, as it turns out, there is a way to get permanent custom firmware on the PSP 3000, and it is based around a high enough firmware version that it should be able to play newer games.

The remake of FFII that is currently out is a remake of the Japanese game known as FFII, not the one known as FFIV in Japan. There is a remake of FFIV in the works, which will contain everything every version of FFIV has had before, save for the 3D graphics of the DS version, it uses new-ish 2D graphics of a higher quality than the original version. It also will contain "Final Fantasy IV: The After Years" in its entirety, so you don't have to deal with any episodic release crap.

custom firmware wasn't that hard for me to do, and it's really handy. I used like 3 programs, put them on the psp and installed them in a different order. I have a 1000 though, I think I heard 3000's were much more difficult to hack.

But you don't need to bother with the pandora battery type thing with 3000s, though permanent custom firmware is still new on the 3000, so I wouldn't touch it just yet.

Since the master keys to the encryption have been found and the encryption method reverse engineered, many homebrew programs have been signed to work on official firmware, mostly emulators, and you could sign them yourself too.

Granted, that's some convincing swag, but in a ditch-defense effort to back up my game trade I at least have put myself to the plan of buying primarily last-gen games. I mostly wanted to get rid of my DS before the 3DS came and the DS and DS accessories would drop in price.

@Steven: Actually the web browser in the 3DS will be the same exact one they use in the PSP/PS3.

Nah, its fair. I put you (two nintendupes) up to the challenge of naming a game and you listed several. I was aware that there will be some decent buys, but there's nothing good for me so far with the 3DS. Good luck to you with that though.

The list of launch titles is really good compared to other systems. Most systems launched with 3 or 4 titles, the 3DS has 20 or so... I don't see where the hate is comming from. This isnt babby's first handheld is it?

I'm definitely not buying the first 3ds model right away, I don't trust that since the first ds model I bought breaks easily and the touch screen scratches over every little thing. Hopefully they don't make the first 3ds model like this and I doubt they will but I'm definitely waiting for comments on reliability before I buy one. I mean, I think they probably got everything good and fine now but I don't have money to throw around and I'm still ticked that my first ds got outdated more and more like 7 times, that and I can't play my ds unless i'm in a dark room now.

Okay, DN, I've done a bit of research, and there are a couple of groups that have found ways to sign the ISO images of games so they can be played on OFW. PM me if you want more details here.

The PSP has had a sub-par run thus far, some great games, and a whole lot of crap games.

After a couple years the left trigger started acting up on my DS fat, but it went through a lot of punishment up till that point. The power button on my DS lite can be a little finicky, and sometimes takes 2 tries to turn on or off, not really an issue.
The machines are built very well anyway.

yeah, but my problem was with the touch screen, the thing has probably 10 000 scratches on it, mainly from my cousin using it back in 2005... Point is that the touch screen was the issue and it's really irritating. Recently, one of the hinges broke too so the ds is only holding on by one hinge. Not like I haven't taken good care of it either, the only other 3 people I knew with the original DS had a destroyed touch screen after about a month as well.

I've heard good things about Valkyria Chronicles as well.
I haven't played the first one, as I lack a PS3. The second was awesome, I put more than a few hours into it.

Eighty-three percent average, lowest score is sixty, highest is ninety-five. Universal praise for graphics and setting and the unique take on strategy games. Criticism mostly being for its light atmosphere and smaller scale battles than the first game.

The third one is out in Japan, and I can't wait for it to come out in America, apparently it takes itself a bit more seriously than the second, from what I heard the first was extremely serious, I played the second and it was a bit silly at times, especially for a game taking place during some sort of civil war that has erupted as a direct after-effect of a huge war.

I don't think the touch screen was the issue and it's more user based. I'm 90% sure they use the same material on all of the DS line up. I don't have a single scratch on mine.

I think the issue with scratches is that people assume you have to press against the screen.

Same here, my DS lite's screen was scratch free when I got rid of it, and my DSi's screen is still scratch free.
You don't need to apply pressure to use the touch-screen.

Not really a fair assumption for me. I saw how bad my brothers ds' were getting before I bought one and so I used extra care to not have that happen to mine, it failed though. I let my cousin use it once and she did quite a bit of damage to it, but there was way more done by me over the years... I think I had a bad stylus as well, either way my screen got destroyed when I tried to treat it right.

When I get a 3ds, I'm buying screen protectors for sure. Also though I'd like to comment that I borrowed my friends ds lite for like 3 months back in 2007 or something and it was scratch free when I got it, and scratch free when I gave it back to him.

I'm not terribly concerned since they aren't new to touch-screens anymore and they've made several different ds models before landing at the 3ds but you can't blame me. I bought the ds when I was 10 or 11 for 190 bucks which took me forever to save up for back then (5 or 6 months). You can't blame me for being weary of dropping a couple hundred dollars I don't have on something that may break down again. I'm just saying I'm waiting it out this time, when I bought the DS it was brand new, there were still under 20 games out for the console.

$190? I can't recall ever seeing the MSRP over $149.99.

When I bought mine, it was a DS lite, my freshman year. I had it in my pocket and was walking home from the bus stop. I slipped on a patch of ice (it was February), the hinge broke. I had had it a little more than a month. Never got it fixed beyond using super glue to make a lump on that hinge so that it would stay open. Everything else was fine with it, despite that damage. Never put it in my pocket again. I got a DSi about a year later, got a nice protective case for it and I never keep it in my pocket. I was able to get my PSP for that old DS, as my friend had pretty much destroyed his somehow. The top screen was broken to the point where not a single thing was visible on it, the hinge was even worse and several of the buttons didn't function at all. I can't imagine what he did to destroy his DS that bad.

it was 190 dollars at the time because the specific ds I found (The only one there at the store at the time) came bundled with Animal Crossing Wild World. I remember that because my bank account at the time didn't allow 11 year olds to spend more than 100 dollars in a day so I needed my folks even though I had like 200 dollars saved up lol. Might have been 170 but I'm pretty sure it was 190.

Ah, that makes sense. Though what is the point of buying them bundled if it is no cheaper than buying them as separate items? I don't like it when they force you to buy a specific game with a console, especially when it is one of those games you had no desire to play and would have never bought otherwise.
When I bought my DS, it came with no games at all. It was a month before I had enough money to buy a game for it, so I could only use it to play GBA games.

I don't know, but I was an impatient kid, this was like 6 years ago lol and I had been waiting to get a DS after seeing my brothers that I bought the one they were selling because I wanted one so bad. I think there was other games I really wanted instead but it didn't really matter. There weren't many ds games at the time and my brothers had Super Mario 64 ds and yoshis touch and go and all the decent games at the time already.

I wanted my DS so bad I had my mom drive me in stock (it was right after Christmas, most places were sold out), I couldn't afford one with any sort of bundle and couldn't afford games, so I knowingly bought something I knew would be useless for a while. Even though I had GBA games, I still had a perfectly good GBA SP.
