To be honest I don't cry very much if at all, even at funerals of family members, so my answer must be no, I will not cry.
However, his passing will have significance to all gamers as so many of us enjoy his creations.

I wouldn't care tbh, never was a die hard fan of his games, it would effect me as any other death really. The only ones in recent memory that was a shocker was John Ritter and the creator of Pokemon whose name escapes me.

Diddo. Ultimately we all go down that path and I've learned to accept the parting of our dearly beloved. Other than the final goodbye tears, I rarely cry for any other reason.

That line of "Besides, he's no Hideo Kojima" was a joke, don't you get it? I can't cry for anyone I don't know.
Yes, the games of Hideo Kojima did have more of an impact on me, how am I delusional? I wasn't deeply impacted by an obese plumber eating mushrooms to gain super powers and I wasn't impacted by a silent elf boy in a tunic.
Oh, and it's not just Metal Gear, I happened to like the Boktai series and Zone of the Enders.
Granted, most of Kojima's works are Metal Gear, but I find stories about nuclear deterrence and war much more interesting than stories about saving a princess from a castle.

Demon-Mask

Difficult choice.
If I remove Kojima, I miss out on Metal Gear.
If I remove Miyamoto, I pretty much kill gaming.
If we were to let gaming be revived regardless, I'd go with removing Miyamoto. This is going on purely the merit of the impact of the games on me, but since Miyamoto played a major role in reviving the industry and set the course of the industry as a whole, I'd have to remove Kojima and miss out on Metal Gear.
Damn it, I lose either way.

The name of the main character of the PC game Daikatana, Hiro Miyamoto, is a homage to Miyamoto.
The character Gary Oak from the Pokémon anime series is named Shigeru in Japan and is the rival of Ash Ketchum (called Satoshi in Japan). Pokémon creator Satoshi Tajiri was mentored by Miyamoto.
In 1998, Miyamoto was honored as the first person inducted into the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences' Hall of Fame.
In 2006, Miyamoto was made a Chevalier (knight) of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Minister of Culture Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres.
On November 28, 2006, Miyamoto was featured in TIME Asia's "60 Years of Asian Heroes," alongside Hayao Miyazaki, Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Bruce Lee and the Dalai Lama.
He was later chosen as one of Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People of the Year in both 2007 and also in 2008, in which he topped the list with a total vote of 1,766,424.
At the Game Developers Choice Awards, on March 7, 2007, Miyamoto received the Lifetime Achievement Award "for a career that spans the creation of Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda to the company's recent revolutionary systems, Nintendo DS and Wii."
Both GameTrailers and IGN placed Miyamoto first on their lists for the "Top Ten Game Creators" and the "Top 100 Game Creators of All Time" respectively.
In a survey of game developers by industry publication Develop, 30% of the developers chose Miyamoto as their "Ultimate Development Hero".
He was made a Fellow of BAFTA at the British Academy Video Games Awards on March 19, 2010.
Miyamoto is also the first interactive creator nominated for the highest recognition in the Spanish-speaking world, the Prince of Asturias Award.

I enjoy games on their own merits, not what they did for the industry.
That said, the Metal Gear series did have an influence on the industry as a whole. In 1988, Metal Gear pretty much created the stealth genre. Metal Gear Solid revived that genre years later, and also was one of the first games that was highly cinematic.
Regardless, Miyamoto had more of an impact on the industry, and his games are all pretty good. I was just saying that the impact Kojima's work had on me directly was greater than the impact Miyamoto's work had on me directly.
I wasn't bashing Miyamoto, without him the industry would likely be dead, and it was Super Mario World and The Legend of Zelda: a Link to the Past that got me into gaming.

I agree, that was an interesting article. I can understand Miyamoto being on the top of the list, but Will Wright and Sid Meier are ranked a little high, if you ask me.
Now then, this topic is not about whether Kojima is better than Miyamoto, it is about Miyamoto. So, I'll get back on topic.

Well obviously but Will Wright and Sid Meier are undeniably deserving of a high spot on a gaming list. Wright for the Sim series which needs no explanation of why it's iconic. Meier for Civilization and other hits.
Btw-
In 1999, Meier became the second person to be inducted into the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences' Hall of Fame (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academy_of_Interactive_Arts_and_Sciences%27_Hall_o f_Fame). The first to receive that honor was Shigeru Miyamoto (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shigeru_Miyamoto) from Nintendo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo).
Wright was the fifth.
Btw this has been bugging me.
In 1988, Metal Gear pretty much created the stealth genre.
Not really. Castle Wolfenstein did before MG and other games had stealth elements too. MG was the first mainstream success, it didn't really create anything. Also Tenchu came out a little before MGS and it was a much better stealth game, imo of course. Not to totally bash MG but I think it's pretty overrated and now it just sells on brand name and flashy cutscenes.

An analogy to make between Miyamoto and Kojima is like comparing Gutenberg and William Randolph Hearst.
Gutenberg made newspapers possible with the invent of the printing press, Hearst changed the way newspapers and the media were read. Without Gutenberg, there is no Hearst. Therefore, Gutenberg's impact is more important and long lasting.

Well in reality we do compare these kind of things all the time so this whole tangent is kinda pointless.
Also the whole thing about if "without X we'd have no Y" is pretty annoying. How does anyone know? If Miyamoto decided to be a plumber instead of working on games maybe someone else would've come up with something better. Maybe without the success of Miyamotos vision we'd be seeing more diversity in games or more widespread appeal? The point is we don't know.
Without religion the world would be a better place and we'd already be colonizing other planets. Am I rite?
