Snow in SOUTH TEXAS

It appears that there is a chance that it will be snowing in my city for a couple of days as the temperature will drop to the single digits later tonight and stay below 30 degrees F the rest of the week with rain...that creates snow right? Just how cold does it have to be for it to really snow a few inches? I don't know how to feel. I feel excited that there is a possibility for a good amount of snow to fall. But I hate cold weather. I feel comfortable in 80+ degrees F and feel cold once it gets into the 60s...

You may get ice rain or sleet. I remember TrakMastaTom talking about ice rain when he lived in Missouri. If you get snow in Texas, the state may shut down.

I'm the same as you, I'm a warm weather guy (since I'm in Idaho, doesn't happen much). Over here, it can be in the high 30's/low 40's for it to snow, but it is very dry here. The warmer it is, the better it packs for snowballs/snowmen. I've been listening to sports radio and everyone is in Dallas/Ft. Worth, the cold weather seems to be the hot topic.

This morning on my way to work, the thermometer outside said -18F, if it wasn't so clear outside, it would be a lot warmer.

I've never seen it this cold in Texas in my seven years of living here.......

But I don't think it's going to snow at all. All the precipitation has moved on to the east coast.

British Columbia, Canada seems to be one of the very few places that hasn't been hit too hard yet.

What's going on? - clearly something has changed.

My point is that I haven't seen anything like this in my 40 years on this planet, so that says to me that something besides our normal tracking of the Sun has changed in the meantime.

I'm saying that I believe peoples' monkeying around with the upper atmosphere, altering the cloud/ weather patterns, and that darn oil spill are possibly causing this through interruption/ diversion of Global energy flow.

No, actually the same thing can happen with regular snow and often does here in Vancouver {on the rare occasion that it snows here}:
it snows, then the weather warms up a bit and melts the snow, then everything freezes and the streets and sidewalks get covered in ice.

I have a friend who lives in Georgia. Yesterday I gave her a heads up about the cold and wind that was coming her way.

Today she tells me that it was 72 degrees there today! She described it as "the perfect spring day". And here the high was 35 or so, with wind chill pushing that way lower.

It was crazy hearing that, it made me a bit jealous.

I have about 2 feet of snow outside my house from two weeks ago. It never goes away. It's so freakin cold here, there was one inch of snow on the ground that we didn't go to school because the ice was so thick and made the roads extremely dangerous. It's really awful here o.o Worst winter in my life here at New York...

Oh I remember this all too well, I would go and shovel for over an hour everyday, and it would be back to 3 feet within a few days if I didn't I remember specific times shoveling in a blizzard twice because by the time I finished there was a foot on the driveway again.

Edit: Made me 10-20 bucks every time though, and it wasn't really always everyday. Every 1-4 days

Yeah well we ain't used to the cold. What's the hottest temperature you've had to deal with and for how long? Without an air conditioner.

It gets really bad here in the summer, our seasons are dramatic like that. It gets around 100 degrees with humidity sometimes. The kind of weather where you don't wanna move, it's just not worth it. I don't have any exact figures but I know from experience that I'd be almost dying of heatstroke for at least the entire month of july and into august. Average is slightly above 80 though. I know it's consistently hotter where you are but isn't it more of a dry heat? I hate hot areas either way but I think I could deal with it without the crazy humidity.

Btw I noticed a huge icicle outside my bathroom window today. If it's still there tomorrow I'll take a pic of it. It's only about a day old and it's almost five feet long and all gnarled looking. It hangs almost directly over my back door.:tremble:

School has been cancelled for the rest of the week due to cold weather in my city. SO that means I don't have to work till Monday! I think it's retarded that this is happening. It's only in the low 30s here :bulgy-eyes:. A nice :sheep: coat keeps me warm and fuzzy.

Kids around here go to school in the middle of blizzards with temps in single digits. Pretty much the only thing that cancels school is lots of ice. They do cancel school sometimes because of snow but it has to be severe. When I lived in Maine my hair would freeze while waiting for the bus. When I say freeze I meant like literally frozen solid. Those kids in Texas don't know what cold is. :lol:

School was up and running on Wednesday, but closed for the rest of the week.

It didn't snow, but there is going to be ice out on the road. Last time that happened here, there were like 15+ car wrecks on the expressway, power loss in random sectors of the city due to ice on the generators (I imagine) and water pipes busting out with hawaiian punch. The city was out putting sand on the roads to help melt the ice. It don't think that works as well as salt though.

I don't believe that steven. We get comparable winters here and sometimes stuff has to close because of ice storms and such. Most places stay open as long as possible though. I think they only close because they're worried about being liable for people dieing in their parking lots.

Yeah, but you all are used to that. My cousins came down from Michigan a few years back during the summer. They refused to step out in the day and would only go to places that had central air.

It takes approximately 10 - 15 cm of snow to cause problems for most Vancouverites, because a lot of them don't seem to know that regular tires will not cut the mustard.

Even the buses start having problems, but it's because of the humidity here; we're always getting the wet, damp snow, not that nearly - weightless stuff they get in the prairies.

Yeah JG the snow here recently has been so heavy it's ridiculous. I can usually shovel the entire driveway fine but these last couple times it's been rough. Clear like two feet and have to take a break. Did that this morning and my downtime was spent turning away from the freezing rain and trying to warm my hands up. Halifax city hall’s thinking was to just get as many people as possible off the streets so the roadways could be cleared quickly. Let it be known that I lived in northern Alberta for many years and so I understand completely what biting, driving cold is all about - one winter morning up there it was - 60C = the coldest I've ever been and got frostbite on my feet that day!

I don't know, it was sometime in the 80's or 90's it happened to the kid and he wasn't aware that there was a snow day... So yeah. Really lame though.

I actually didn't know any different. I always thought the rule applied to everywhere as a young kid. Wasn't until a few years ago that I learned differently lol.

That's mostly because of the ever present danger of packed snow or black ice, in my opinion.

I stayed in the area of the city near N.A.I.T. while going to school there, and rented a basement room in what seemed to be a neighborhood of seniors.

You must have been in western Washington, over here in eastern Washington it isn't uncommon to see two feet fall in one day, one year we got six feet worth of snow in one day, but it collapsed under its weight and so it wasn't six feet deep. My friend lived in Olympia that year, and she said there was maybe ten inches of snow and everything shut down.
It took those six-feet worth of snow to close school, anything less and we go.
Let's just say this, winters in eastern Washington are brutal, but I've never spent a winter elsewhere.

I hate snow days, because around here, it means there is enough snow that it will take four hours to shovel, and I'll be tired as hell by the end of the day. If I'm not at school, and It's snowing, then chances are I have to shovel.

They don't actually live in San Antonio, but in one of those small towns that are lumped in with it. But yeah, I can't imagine waking up to that much snow and not having to go to school.
