View Full Version : Obnoxious ads

Dudebro has had enough. I don't want to see a full screen ad when I open up a news page. I don't want to wait 30 seconds for each video I wanna see on youtube. Enough is really enough. Does ANYONE actually like them or decide to buy something from these ridiculously intrusive commercials? Maybe I'm weird but I have the exact opposite reaction, I'll intentionally avoid a product if I see it marketed this way. I realize I take this way too seriously but I know I'm not the only one who's completely sick of this nonsense.
That full screen ad I was talking about is for the new Piers Morgan show where he talks to other celebs(If I cared any less I'd be dead). When I say full screen I'm not exaggerating at all. It comes up and takes over your screen for a good 30 seconds, no clicking away to an article until it's over. The only option is to close the entire window. Who thought this was a good idea? I actually saw a few comments about it in news stories, that's how bad it is.
The Youtube ads are bad, as I'm sure most of you know. Whenever the video is bigtime they force you to sit through a 30 second ad(usually the same damn one over and over everyday). Who else opens another window and ignores it?
I just needed to vent after hitting several of these in a row. So does this bother anyone else?
This is an example of a good ad.

Definitely bothers me. I can't think of a single thing I have EVER bought because of one of these advertisements.

Has it ever convinced you not to buy a product?

Oh ya! The particularly annoying ones where you are forced to watch to get to content you wanted to see have definitely made me stay away from those products.
Not hard though especially when it seems the stuff they target you with often has nothing to do with what you are trying to look at.

Pfft. Who makes a product that doesn't support IE?

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think Adblock works on this kind of embedded advertising. Maybe the CNN one but the Youtube one is basically part of the video.

I've never listened to any really that I can think of. Only ones I can care about are ones for movies and even then, rarely. Also, rarely that I will listen to a movie ad. The thing that annoys me is seeing the same ad 300 times over again for several months.

Those are sooooo annoying. Especially when you have some annoying woman screaming at you about cereal.:at-wits-end: I also hate those ones that say "click here to win a free wii"

It was only a matter of time before they figured out that most people avoid pop up ads,and make a monster ad like the one DB is talking about.
I personally hate them and see it as them turning us into a captive audience in our own homes who have no choice but to tolerate this BS.
{just like TV - :loser:}
Yes I've seen lots of pop ups but haven't encountered the abomination that takes your window over completely yet.
Hey - isn't youtube content ad enough?
To give you an example, I have been turned onto different musical artists by watching videos there and ended up buying their CD's; in this way, they're getting free advertising for everyone involved, aren't they?, the site AND the artists?
You still have all the ads on the page, the sponsored links and whatnot.
RANT rant rant rant rant rant rant .. and furthermore, I'm sick of having to sit through ads to earn the privilege of watching a video:waiting::bulgy-eyes::curse:

The saddest part is that I'm actually used to them now.

I was getting used to it but then I got assaulted by a combo of them today and it just got to me. From lame sites I expect tons of ads and stuff but major sites should do whatever they can to make them as passive as possible, they don't need the revenue that badly.

Well, ever since I started to use Firefox with Adblock no ads appear in front of ANY videos.

Okay, heres one I got to complain about; ads hacking themselves into your facebook account and constantly sending messages to everyone you know with links to different ads. Guess what happens if you click the link? Your account gets hacked too and your profile starts auto sending these too. I'm so going to sign up for whatever these ads are offering! Yeah effing right.

Thanks for bringing this up.
I had this happen recently and started getting e mails from people I haven't heard from in ages asking me why I sent them that link and what does it mean.
And I'm like:

totally clueless as to what they could be talking about .. and wondering what horrible thing had been sent in my name!

They are awful. The ads just aggravate me, they don't make me want to buy the product at all...

I hate when i want to watch something on youtube and an ad pops up. I figure hey why dont i just reload the page, or click back and go back to it...., but no dice. Because as soon as i get back to it, "hello same ad i just saw a minute ago".

No, there is no escape!
I think we should start an online petition or something.
Clearly by this thread alone it's plain to see that people don't like it, being a captive audience this way.

Oh ya, I forgot - they killed him live on air - for the commercial value of airing the act!
