What is your opinion on the LEGO games?

I think they're pretty good. I have Lego Batman, Star Wars the Complete Saga, and Indiana Jones the Original Adventures. The Star Wars and Indiana Jones games do very well following the plots of the movies(though the enemies are not Nazi's in the Indy game) and fans of the movies will get the most enjoyment out of them

They're not hard by any means but collecting all the stuff in all the levels takes a lot of time.

To me Lego Batman is by far the best of the ones I've played.

They're all right, but nothing special. They have it in the fun department and the games can be entertaining.

I've played a couple as free games but they're way too easy. From what I saw they are very faithful to the source material though. Seems to be very popular with kids and die hard fans(i.e. Batman fans).

After playing Ninja Gaiden Sigma and having my butt handed to me over and over,it's nice to play easy games where you can't die:clap:

I got Lego Harry Potter 1-4 for my kid. He loves it, but he can't seem to get used to the controls. I'm going to have to play it so I can instruct him on how it's done.

All the ones I played are just a gimmick, and not that fun at all. There was one for the DS that was a RTS that had potential, but I lost interest quickly.

I've played several, the gf is a huge fan. Quick and easy 1000 gamerpoints if I feel like achievement farming.

Occasionally there is a good puzzle or two. No challenge involved at all.

The Lego games could have been awsome, but for some reason they decided to completely ignore what made Lego fun, witch is the creation process. The should have been like Minecraft crossed with Rampart or something. The potential was pretty much limitless really.

Well yeah anything seems easy when compared to those games. ;)

@Steven- Lego may have ignored the creation part of Legos but they stayed true to one major factor in their continued success, kid appeal. When I come across younger gamers or parents of younger gamers they will almost always have at least one of these games on their played list but usually more. Combine that with the way they're now bundled with cheaper xboxs and it seems Lego made a pretty smart move.

So they couldnt have done all that and made the game good? Care too explain why not?

I have no way of knowing their intentions but I assume they wanted to make a lego themed game that is both easy and accessible to kids of all ages. Instead of going for the well known building part of lego(which not everyone enjoys) they wanted to make a world out of legos. It may be simplistic or gimmicky to us but it seems to really work with the target audience, kids.

So they assumed little kids wouldnt understand the finer points of using Lego... right.
Anyway, you might think they did a fine job with thier run of the mill 3d romp, with the latest movie theme tacked on, I just think it's a shame that they couldnt have made something that reflected the creativity of Lego, and made a good game. I think you need to get out of the mindset that if something sells well then it is a success.

Also don't get hot under the collar, this is just a discussion, not an attack.

So they assumed little kids wouldnt understand the finer points of using LegoGood thing I didn't actually say that or you'd have a point. My point is a game specifically about lego building wouldn't be as successful, probably. I assume Lego wanted to make a game series that had mass appeal and would easily transition to other licensed properties like Star Wars or Batman.

Anyway, you might think they did a fine with thier run of the mill 3d romp, with the latest movie theme tacked onYou're right I think they did fine. You obviously disagree with their direction but I can't see how you can fault them for making a hit that probably breathed life back into the Lego franchise. Without researching it I bet sales were slumping because most modern kids want electronic stuff like video games and this was their answer to it. I think it's a brilliant first step for them. It's like the Wii focusing on kids stuff to indoctrinate a new generation, you have no problem with that right? Lots of gamers feel Nintendo could've made a better console geared towards it's older, original fanbase, but they didn't and probably for the exact same reasons.

I just think it's a shame that they couldnt have made a game that reflected the creativity of Lego, and made a good gameLike this? LEGO Universe : The Massively Multiplayer Online Game - LEGO Universe (http://universe.lego.com/en-us/splash/default.aspx)
That game incorporates the Lego games gimmick and the creativity of Legos. It's also heavily aimed at kids but it does allow them to collect pieces and freely customize their homes or w/e else they're allowed to build(my info is from wiki).

I think you need to get out of the mindset that if something sells well then it is a success.Do you realize how stupid that sounds? If something sells well IT IS a success regardless of how much stevencassidy disapproves of it's content. It may not be a great piece of art that will be remembered for eternity but it is a success. Perhaps you need to get out of the mindset of "if it's got mainstream popularity it's probably garbage"?

Also don't get hot under the collar, this is just a discussion, not an attack. You're the one who seems to have some pent up anger over this not me. I'm just trying to stick up for the decision because it seems to be a good one and helps keep Lego relevant in the age of video games and other electronic entertainment. Things change old man.

it was made way before the other series even spawned so I don't know, guess I just figured... I believe it was a different company too.

I'm glad you brought that up cam. I wasn't aware of all the Lego video games until now. Apparently they did make a game like steven talked about-

It's PC and older but it sounds fun and truly creative.

Btw I forgot about Bionicle being Lego. I bet if that came out when I was a kid I'd be in love with it.

You think only in terms of dollars DB, there is more too it than that. That's a typical American attitude though, so I can't hold it against you. Lots of other people also take things like quality into concideration.

You really are ridiculous about this you know that? I certainly do not only think about it in dollars. You made the claim that just because it sells well doesn't mean it's a success, how else would we judge it's success? Who's opinion or what scale is better than sales figures and fan loyalty? Those were sincere questions(except the first one) and I hope you answer them seriously.

To judge it's success you need to take everything about it into concideration, development time, was the game produce within budget?, was it recieved well?, is it a good game? did the sound and music turn out well? is there an abundance of graphical glitches, or obvious mistakes in the programming?

If you stick the word financial in front of the word success then you can look at the numbers exclusivly.

I only mentioned the hot under the collar thing because in the DC PS2 topic you were getting mad, and I wanted to make sure to keep it casual.

If it really was a bad game(for fans and/or the devs expectations) it wouldn't be selling so well or continue to go on like it has.

Is it a good game is far too subjective without taking it's sales and popularity into account. In who's opinion is it good? Don't the millions of kids who love it count?

Sound and music is important when considering if a game is good or not? To me that is cosmetic and can be ignored if it's bad or bland. It might help it be considered better overall but it shouldn't really hurt it if it's average or uninspired. Gameplay is really all that's important.

If you stick the word financial in front of the word success then you can look at the numbers exclusivly.Obviously. But, I was looking at the sales and it's continued popularity. If a game really sucks it will not sell well consistently. Now before any of you jump to cite stuff like Halo or COD let me just say you're wrong. Those games continue to sell so well because millions of gamers love them despite any flaws, lack of content or innovation.

Plenty of games come out with lots of hype and never go anywhere, this is not the case with the Lego games. They sell well and remain steadily popular for a good reason. They deliver a game that it's audience wants. It's literally no different than the Wii making mostly casual/kids games. Do you have a problem with the Wii being a success?

I only mentioned the hot under the collar thing because in the DC PS2 topic you were getting mad, and I wanted to make sure to keep it casual.Well that's because people were being unfair about the PS2 because of their own personal biases.

Well, we see it different ways I guess.
Now on to what you said about sound and music, I absolutely disagree. Music and sound are extremely important. They are right up there with appealing graphics, they do so much to effect the mood of a game, thus the overal experience. Take metroid for example, think about how effective this intro is to set the whole tone of the game:

They are right up there with appealing graphics, they do so much to effect the mood of a game, thus the overal experienceAren't you one of the people who so rabidly insists that graphics are not important? If so then music isn't either. Btw lots of people mute games and listen to other stuff, been happening since the dawn of gaming. Music is only important to a niche crowd of gamers and reviewers.

I'm not saying I don't appreciate game music, not at all. Just saying it's trivial to how good a game actually is.

Btw I'm really interested in what you think about my comparing Lego games with the Wii. I think it's a great point, how about you?

Slime Slayer

I think graphics are important, but not in the same way hardcore gamers think they are important.
For example I think the graphics in KOF 12 are way better than SF4. I've been sick of graphics being the focus of developers for many years now.

Comparing the Lego games to the Wii, meaning that they are both dumbed down and childish?
I simply don't agree, your trying to compare a few games in a series to an entire library of games. There is no point in putting the 2 side by side.

Dudebro

I think graphics are important, but not in the same way hardcore gamers think they are important. And I agree with that but no one seems to believe me for some reason. I take in the whole game when I evaluate them but gameplay and story/characters factor in higher than anything else by a long margin.

Comparing the Lego games to the Wii, meaning that they are both dumbed down and childish?
No I wasn't trying to troll you about it I was being serious. I'm not making a direct comparison, of course that would be silly. I'm saying in the broader sense it does what the Wii and it's library does-
They deliver a game that it's audience wants. The Lego games are enduring and very popular with it's target audience. I'm not saying they're fantastic masterpieces but they are definitely successful and good(since good is relative and millions of people feel this way).
Is Lego Batman much different than New Mario Bros Wii? Both are simple platformer games that have lots of hand holding and recycled ideas. Mario bros may get a pass because they basically set the standard but a side by side comparison shows them at pretty much the same level imo. The only difference is Mario Bros is almost always an instant classic and other games like Lego have to really capture it's audience with things it wants, like Star Wars and Batman. I agree that the games suck but they weren't made for me or you really.

Slime Slayer

I never said the Lego games sucked, I said it sucked that they turned there back on what Lego was all about, and the potential the games could have had, and decided to replace it with standard fair.

The gameplay in NSBW is infinitely better than in the Lego games, I can't beleive you put them on the same level.

Dudebro
01-05-2011, 05:31 AM
You never said they sucked but you implied that they aren't successful, by your definition. For some reason you think they failed by branching out and appealing to a wider audience, much like the Wii did. It seems to me they just wanted to catch a new generation gamers while they're young and transition them into their core product. That Lego Universe combines the two ideas, doesn't that seem like a way to promote the creation part of Legos? Lots of these kids wouldn't care otherwise. Online/offline video games dominate the market. Cannot fault their strategy as far as I can tell.

It's really THAT much better? I think your inner fanboy is coming out a little on this one. I'm not trying to say they're exactly equal but they are very similar for what I'm talking about. They are simple platforming, an emphasis on kids and they cater to their audience. Obviously Mario Bros has better level design and gameplay overall but it's also designed with all ages in mind, Lego games are not. Like my Wii comparison it's not direct, just relative. I'm trying to give the Lego games the credit they deserve. If they were out when we were kids I bet most of us would treasure them as much other games like Mario or Dragon Warrior.
