Anime Recommendation

Alright, I'm looking to watch a new anime (sort of), since Bleach only comes on once a week, and I'm on/off watching DVDs of Dragonball.

Most of you here seem to know good anime, so any recommendations for an anime that you'd think I'd like. Ex: Dragonball, DBZ, DBZ GT, Bleach, Full Metal Alchemist (Very little I watched) are some examples.

Any help?

Ones I am considering:
Death Note (My bro finished it and its only 26 episodes)
Zatch Bell (Is this anime any good?)
Cowboy Bebop (Ive heard this was good)
Hellsing (Same as Cowboy Bebop)
InuYasha (A friend telling me to watch it)

I liked dubbed more too, it boils down to not wanting to miss the animation while I'm reading something. If I know all the words to something because I watched it enought times I prefer the subtitiles.

There are a few I actually prefer dubbed, though subbed is the way to go in most cases.

When I started watching anime I felt the same way..but the more I tried to watch the subbed version the more I learned to appreciate how the original anime was intended to be watched.

Plus the issue I find with some dubbed shows is that the voices for some characters are changed altogether. It could go from a deep older male voice to a squeaky american voice in some instances.

Plus I found that A LOT of great anime never get dubbed due to the fact that there to "out there" for american audiences.

I would recommend starting with one dubbed series and one subbed series then going from there...you'll thank me for it in the long run!

Im a subbed over dubbed person as well but I started out looking for good english dubbed...which are hard to find lol.

There are some good exceptions but overall there arent that many

Watch Death Note. It's great. Since these guys already posted most of the good animes out there. I'll just post a few that I didn't see up there that I liked personally.

Cowboy Bebop is a MUST watch series. Its everything that anime is supposed to be. I'll even give you a pass and watch the dubbed version (because its one of the best dubbed shows).

Black Lagoon is about a dude who gets kidnappe by pirates called Black Lagoon because of some big secret that the company he works for is trying to cover up.

He ends up seeing that the company is corrupt and ends up staying with his kidnappers and joins the crew. After all that he starts going on adventures with them...which are crazy lol

its a pretty good show and theres lots of jiggling and shooting.

Another series I would recommend is Lupin the Third.

Its an older series but its still one of the best and funniest anime series of all time IMO:D

I probably already said this, but I recommend Samurai Champloo. It is a really good anime.

Code Geass is nothing like Cowboy Bebop. It is about a terrorist fighting against his home country, in hopes of giving the land of the colony he is located on, back to it's old government. It is much more complicated, but there are Jedi mind tricks and giant robots and double agents and stuff.

A teenage boy runs from the Police, straight into a Yakuza gambling house .. where he makes a bargain with one of the games' participants who's just about to lose:

If Akagi wins the game, he will share the earnings with him.
But once Akagi starts to win {on that Legendary night} he begins to gain a new sense of worth .. and takes his game to a Godly level, where the stakes could be Human life .. his opponents' or his own.

It gets truly hardcore in the end, and later, the series introduces a new concept to Mahjong that totally blew me away.

I was like that after the first season of Bleach. I also thought it was amazing what they did to lead up to the end of the season. But I have to say I think it's better to have the characters speak english. I think it's annoying to have to read the

What's wrong with subtitles?
I would rather read an accurate translation than to hear some re - written, poorly acted, Americanized version where they change the dialogue almost every time.

Sometimes it's so bad it's like you're not even watching the same show.
So I'll take subtitles every time!

It matters on the show. For example, I would never ever ever ever watch DBZ subbed because of how rediculous Goku sounds. However, I'll watch the English dub since it is much better and the voice actors match their characters (for the most part :p). Though I will never watch DBZ Kai since it ruined the series by taking out blood and funny/crude parts :(

I'm not into much anime but I honestly don't care if it's subtitled or not. If the story is good it's good. Also, the american voice actors are pretty funny sounding sometimes.

The sub vs dub debate will go on forever due to the fact that it is very subjective. Personally I prefer subtitled anime due to the fact that Im seeing it the way the creators intended and there a lot more anime that are subbed then dubbed. One example is a show called Yakitate Japan. I dont think this will ever get licensed or brought state side because its filled with a lot of Japanese cultural references and translating it would probably kill it but I could see it being on Cartoon network or anime network right now.

I can see the appeal of having a dubbed show because it makes it more accessible to just casual viewers but once you get used to subs I dont know many people that go back to watching subbed (unless they have to).

The other point (which has been made already) is that the voice quality/acting ability of american voice actors varies from company to company. There could be an awesome anime that gets dubbed but it gets ruined due to poor voice acting or the translation is all messed up.

Now there are some exceptions to this but unless Funimation or Manga is involved then more then likely its going to fail to measure up to fan expectations.

Nothing is harder for me to watch then a dubbed LIVE action movie lol...At least in anime you can try to match the mouth flaps...in real life its almost imposible to do..

Subs on live action foreign films 100% of the time!

For me, it is the same deal I have with anime. Sometimes it's better dubbed, and sometimes it's better with subtitles.
I find the voicework for dubbed anime pretty bad in most cases, but not bad in an amusing way like Resident Evil.
As for live action movies, it tends to bug me more when it has been dubbed over, when you watch a live action movie, you are seeing the guy who's voice it is you are hearing, not a drawing. It's odd to see one guy's head, but hear another guy's voice when he talks.
It's like if you were to take a video of Clint Eastwood and take out the voice, then take a sound clip of John Wayne and insert that in place of Clint's voice. Even if the voice matches the movements of the face perfectly, something just feels off.

That, and I have a distinct advantage when it comes to watching things in Japanese, I speak enough of the language to understand a good portion of things without the need to use another person's translation work.

I disagree. I think the Japanese voices are better in all ways other that I don't understand enough to watch without the subtitles. I actually liked it in Spanish. The voices for all the characters was dead on and even had the same energy when screaming. To top it off, it was the OVA version being shown fully uncut and unedited other than commercials of course. The only voice that I liked in English was Vegeta. This guy did a great job.

Bumping this topic. Although it took me like 6 months, I finally finished Death Note :p Really great anime, the ending was pretty epic/sad.

Now that Death Note is done with, I'll need to watch a new anime. These are what I have in mind:

After they escape they are hunted by Black Ghost and eventually get sent other Cyborgs to fight like 0010.

I have to agree with that. I don't know why I watched it in the first place, but I did, and I'm glad. I liked the episode about the business man, where the art style is completely different from the rest of the series.

Since this topic has been revived, I've got a few to recommend.

Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica: A magical girl anime, with a major twist. Unlike most magical girl anime, this one is very dark and serious in nature, while the art style is cute to the point of being off-putting, it creates a nice contrast to the dark and depressing atmosphere of the series. Oh, and that ending was probably one of the best I've seen.

Welcome to the NHK: About a college dropout named Satou who has no job, no friends and never leaves his apartment. He is convinced everything is a conspiracy {It is JG the anime, I know}. Due to some unusual circumstances, he ends up going to tell his neighbor to turn his music down, and finds that it is his old friend, who has become an extreme otaku. They end up making a dating sim to convince a girl that Satou is not as pathetic as he seems. It gets really complicated.

Detroit Metal City: about a young man who's dream is to be a pop singer, but he ends up the frontman of a loud and obnoxious death metal band that sings songs about raping and killing. The band is called Detroit Metal City, this band is the one thing he hates the most in the world. It focuses on his attempted separation of himself and the persona of the frontman of this band.

Cromartie High School: about an average student who ends up in a school for delinquents. He attempts to fit in, but he soon finds that the students of the school are beyond strange. A robot, a gorilla, and a silent man who resembles Freddie Mercury are amongst the students.

Ouran High School Host Club: about a female student who has to pretend to be male to pay off a massive debt from a broken vase. Well, it isn't that simple, she has to join a "host club" where males sell dates with themselves.

Akagi: about a Mahjong prodigy playing high-stakes games of mahjong. Betting everything from his fingers to all of the blood in his body. Definitely recommended for people who enjoyed more psychological drama like Death Note, except this makes Death Note look tame.

Kaiji: about a guy who ends up in debt because he cosigned a loan for a coworker. To pay off his debt, the yakuza allow him to gamble on a ship, where all outside debts are cancelled for those who come out ahead. This lands him in more debt, so he ends up participating in other high-stakes gambles, risking everything. Unlike Akagi, Kaiji sometimes loses, making him a bit easier to relate to as a character.

I have so many I could recommend, but for the time being, this will have to suffice. I might post more later.

The charater of Satou does think everything is a conspiracy, you don't. I know this, and was making a joke.
Besides Satou's thing is the "NHK", yours is the "New World Order", which I do believe exists to some extent.
I'd assume you aren't a poor excuse for a human being like Satou, he never leaves his apartment, he has full conversations with his refrigerator and other household appliances, he gets caught in multiple pyramid schemes and even fails at killing himelf. Oh, and he lives entirely on his parents money because he was a college dropout and never bothered to find a job.

About Akagi, I love that show.

Akagi is one of my favorites, though I prefered Kaiji.
Akagi looks way older than he is, he was thirteen in the beginning, and somewhere under twenty after the timeskip if I remember correctly.
I now want to learn Mahjong, but all I ever find from searching "Mahjong" is Shanghai Mahjong and tile-matching Mahjong. I believe the varient used in the show is called "Riichi Mahjong".

I'd also recommend K-On!, if you like the model of "cute girls doing cute things".
It was entertaining, though I wish they would have played more music and I wish Mugi got more time in the spotlight. She was the greatest of the characters.

If you aren't into cute girls doing cute things, I'd recommend The World God Only Knows, it is about a kid who is known as the "Capturing God" for his skills at dating sims, and he ends up having to capture the hearts of real girls to fufill a contract, or loose his head.

I love that movie. It lacks any real depth but, it's amazing.
The actual F-Zero anime pales in comparison to Redline, Redline feels almost like a prequel to F-Zero and it captures the sense of speed and awesomeness that F-Zero thrives on.

Watch it at Blu-Ray quality if possible, every frame looks good enough to be viable for a wallpaper.
It was mostly hand-drawn over the course of seven years, or so I'm told.

Just started getting into anime recent;y, so far have watched two series, with another couple downloaded already.

The first was Death Note (Awesome! But, I agree with everyone who said that the first half was the best. It's just not the same...).

The other one I've watched from beginning to end is Air Gear.

I don't know if you've heard of it but it's basically about motorized roller blades, and makes you want to get into it!

The main character, Ikki, has grown up without knowing his parent's (as per usual!) And the Family he lives with are a Storm Rider team called Sleeping Forest. They've stopped riding, and have become nothing more than a legend in the AT (Air Trek) scene. Ikki finds out about their team by accident, and wages their emblem in a battle agains a gang of riders just trying to bully anyone in their way.

The whole series is only 25 episodes (technically 26, but there was for some reason episode 21.0 and 21.5!) and it shows his growth as a rider.

It just looks so darn cool!

I can recommend Guin Saga. It's a story about this guy who looks like King from Tekken and has super fighting abilities...and amnesia. He ends up rescuing (he just happened to be sleeping when all sorts of commotion woke him) the young heirs to a kingdom that just got conquered. So he goes with them, because he has no other real plan, as their body guard and to see if he can find out who he is and why he has a leopard's head. It starts off kinda slow, but I started to become curious as to why he actually does have a freakin leopard's head.

@Inc- FMA is nowhere are good as Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood.

I'd suggest Code Geass. It's pretty good even though I've never finished it. The main character is similar to Light in terms of intelligence. They are a little bit similar in personality too (as you will see towards the latter part of the series).

Also Bleach is a good anime more similar to FMA. I would also put Trigun in there as well.

Also there's always Dragon Ball (the prequel/original series of DBZ) and Dragonball GT which is the sequels series to DBZ but it's nowhere as good as DBZ (But still worth the watch)

There was a 27 episode season of Yu-gi-yo called "season 0" by fans that was only released in japan because of it's darker content. It's not NEARLY as lame as the show we have here because yami tortures those who cheat at shadow games, whitch he uses to judge bad guys, and there are a assortment of games besides duel monsters plus trials that really aren't games at all. It's an awesome piece of history. :)

Thankfully, all 27 episodes plus a half hour movie all have english subtitles made by fans.

I highly recommend you watch Shingeki no Kyojin which is Attack on Titan in English.

It takes place several hundred years ago (1300's if I remember correctly) and its about humanity's survival against the "Eotena" or Titans. Hundreds of years ago, Titans suddenly appeared around the world and nearly wiped out the human population. The surviving humans escaped and live in one city with giant walls keeping the Titans out. However, suddenly an abnormal Titan, the Colossal Titan, appears, and I won't say what happens from there :p The story follows Eren Jaeger and his foster sister, Mikasa. Eren's best friend, Armin Arlert is also a main character. But there are the normal Titans that range in different "classes" which is basically just different heights, however there are also "Aberrants" or abnormal Titans that will appear throughout the series.

The show is really morbid but honestly its one of the best shows I've seen in years. Season 1 just ended and its been getting really popular lately. It focuses on humanity's will to survive and the courage and skill to fight the Titans. Titans can only be killed by being slashed in a specific area on the neck. Guns do not effect them, so they use swords and a thing called the Manuever Gear which is really cool in my opinion but I'll let you guys see them for yourself. Not sure when Season 2 will be coming out but they definitely are making more AoT.

Yeah they're pretty disturbing and there are plenty worse ones. Oh and the artistic style this show uses is fantastic. You'll notice throughout the series, the morbid/fearful edits on humans' eyes. Like when they have just witnessed something terrible, like their friend being eaten, their eyes get all darkened and its a nice touch to show how terrified the humans are.

Actually, I just watched the first episode of this and I totally thank you for it. Normally I'm not suppe into anime unless it has a very prominent Western influence, but the presentation of this show is just superb.

Gurren Lagann was fantastic :D Really good storyline, thought it got a little bit over the top near the end but still really enjoyed it (and I'm really not one for mech shows!)

@DN- I'm glad you like it. The way it starts off really caught me off and I was just like "Wow o.o" It has its ups and downs but mostly ups which is good. The late teen episodes were a little lackluster imo but the last 5 or so were really good. Overall a really solid first season and I can't wait until the second.

Watched random episode, hooked for good.

I have friends and family who don't even watch cartoons or anime but loved the series; I'd say: 'You have to watch this show, it's SO GOOD'

WHAT you can expect: {no spoilers, don't worry}

Cowboy Bebop is a unique show among anime.
The only constants are the main characters, Bounty Hunters Jet Black and Spike Spiegel.
Other than that the episodes vary, from being downright hilarious :clown: to deadly serious :o, and even some horror :vampire: as well, depending upon what situation Jet and Spike find themselves in.

If you watch it, I recommend the original Japanese soundtrack instead of the Americanized English dub, due to the fact the original actors have great voices and suit their characters perfectly in my opinion.
{however the English isn't too bad in this series}

Thanks everyone. It seems like most of these are OVA only. (Most of you are going to hate me for this) but I prefer English dub more because that's basically what I grew up with and I could never get into watching it on Japenese subs. So if you haven't left this topic in disgust yet... Are there any dubbed animes that anyone can recommend? (And if they are dubbed, I apologize, I barely had a chance to look at them yet)

Lol, now I pretty much only watch anime in subs. I guess it just takes time to get accustomed to things.

Anyway, I'm bumping this topic to let you all know Fairy Tail is my newest favorite anime. It is around 200 episodes and ongoing for a little while longer. It's a more underrated Shounen compared to Bleach, Naruto, and One Piece, but I love it. I'm addicted to this show :p Anyone who likes Dragon Ball Z, I encourage you to watch this show. The characters in the show use magic which is a form of fighting I think makes Shounen a lot better to watch.

Also, finally started watching Naruto for the first time in my life *yay* The first series seems kinda meh but I'm excited for Shippuden.

I finished the series a couple days ago. Just from looking at it, I didn't really think I'd be into Gurren Lagann. It looked kinda childish and cheesy. I was dead wrong. It takes a few episodes to get going, but once it does, it gets to be one of the most over the top shows I've ever seen. Basically, just take Evangelion, and make it the complete opposite, then you get Gurren Lagann. I'd say at this point, it's my favorite anime, even over the likes of Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop, both of which I loved.
