YouTube - Metrodome Collapses from FOX NFL Sunday

You may or may not know that minnesota got hit pretty hard by a snow storm latley. Well In minneapolis, the snow REALLY piled up and the metrodomes roof couldnt take it. This morning the roof of the metrodome collapsed and snow and water came pouring in. The game scheduled there for today was moved to monday, and to a different site (i forgot where).

The same thing happened in Vancouver a few years back; instead of putting a proper roof on the stadium in the first place they decided to 'cut costs' and install an inflatable roof.
{and someone stuffed their pockets with the savings}

http://media.thestar.topscms.com/images/ff/8a/c3e8979c4ac39ffdf1d664bb824e.jpeg

So now they're in the process of putting on a 'partially retractable' roof {as I understand it}, like they should have in the first place.

Yeah that was some cool footage. It sucks that tax payers will probably have to foot that bill though. Maybe they should take a cut out of the multimillion dollar contracts the players get.

Quarterback - $1,970,982 - NFL's Average Salaries By Position - Photos - SI.com (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/multimedia/photo_gallery/0807/nfl.average.salaries.by.position/content.1.html)
Quarter Back: $1,970,982
Defensive End: $1,583,784
I'll leave some out, and resume down the list
Punter/Kicker: $868,005
Tight End: $863,414

Football is just a game, and the players are getting payed way too much.
$800,000 is a lot of money, more than twenty times what my parents brought in during an average year before my mom was laid off, both work full time jobs, hard jobs.
Football players don't go at it all year round, they may practice during the off-season, but it isn't nearly as intense as a game.
Each game lasts how long? An hour, maybe two if you take out the timeouts, half-time and other little breaks. Players rarely, if ever, play through an entire game. Plus, there are breaks, every time you see the T.V. cut to commercial, there is a break of some sort.

Football players are getting paid obscene quantities of money to play a silly little game.

Average team owner makes 24.7 million a year.

NFL has a salary cap. If you're looking to aim at a pro sport for bein bloated look no further than the MLB and Jeter with his 51 million contract.

You're right Tenser we should make those MLB guys cough up the dough! Btw doesn't that phrase sound disgusting, cough up the dough? I hear it a lot but I don't think people really realize what they're saying.

I know all that, but I am still disgusted that NFL players are getting payed so much for a game.
As far as the MLB goes, I think that is even worse, I am more bugged by them making anything at all from this one.
There is a high rate of injury in football, and it is rather physically intense, they deserve some kind of pay, but not that much.
As for the MLB players, they shouldn't get more than ten dollars per game, no joke. I used to play baseball, it isn't difficult, it isn't all that physically demanding, hell I was good at it, and there isn't a particularly high a risk of injury.

Team owners should get paid ten percent of the sum of the salaries of all their players.
The pay for a football player should look like this, assuming they should be paid for a game:
$300 a month during the on-season, $100 during the off, $100 per game the team is in, an additional $400 if the player actually comes off the bench. An extra $250 if the game is won, then $250 for the player who's role is most significant, say they played the longest or scored the most points, $200 for the second and so on.
While still being overpaid, at least it is less, and it is entirely dependent on their role in a game.
Btw doesn't that phrase sound disgusting, cough up the dough? I hear it a lot but I don't think people really realize what they're saying.
I never thought of that.

Look at it this way:
The players demand high salaries in many cases
The players are producing nothing
The players are doing nothing to better society
The players are not advancing technology
The players are not teaching anyone
The players are not saving lives
The players are playing a game, doing something they enjoy, something they'd do anyway just for the hell of it.

Maybe I should get paid millions of dollars to play video games. It makes just as much sense.

I think its a thing where they know that they can get seriously injured playing the game, and they can use the mass amount of money they have to help pay for fixing them up. I think that would still probably leave them with way more money than they need. And i guess i agree with DM. I dont think they do much to benefit anything.

I would. Being paid millions to play anything is more than anyone deserves. My entire point was that this will probably end up costing tax payers, if not for the actual collapse but for all the other services employed to fix it. The people who make millions(players/owners) should help out with the cost but as we all know that probably won't happen.

That makes you petty, selfish, and greedy in my book.

Anyways, I do not know who will foot the bill for the repairs. It depends on what contract the owner has with the city/state.

The problem isn't players being willing to accept the pay. It is people being willing to give it to them.

Ah, so you feel that employers should be forced into paying their employees less because you've deemed their services less valuable than the actual employer has?

@Everyone: Seriously? If Bill Gates wants to pay some guy 5 million a year to sing Mary Had a Little Lamb what business is it of yours? It's Gates' money, he's allowed to spend it anyway he wants as long as he's not breaking any laws.

I don't think there's anything wrong with athletes making tons of money. It's simple economics. If your job is to be a part of something that brings in billions of dollars and you are a big reason that much money is coming in (the biggest stars in the league) then you deserve to be paid handsomely. Where else would you prefer that money go? The coaches? The owners? The people selling popcorn? It has to go somewhere, it isn't just going to disappear.

It's none of our business what people get paid but that doesn't mean we can't openly disagree with it. Puff Daddy had a man servant who helped him get dressed and stuff, I openly disagreed with that too.

Btw which part made me selfish and stuff? I assume it was the part about what they deserve? If so that's just how I feel about it. I accept that I have no influence on that decision at all and never will. I'm just saying they got a lot of money coming and going, they better not give any of the cost to the customers.

I agree. Professional athletics is a skill, just as computer programming, athletics, song writing are skills. The demand for a decent professional athlete is high while the supply is very low. I heard a statistic that 1-5 % of high school athletes get full ride scholarships for athletics, of those, less than 5% make it professionally, and less than 1% are truly great.

If you want salaries in sports to go down it's simple, stop going to games, stop buying team merchandise, stop watching the games. I have one thing to say, good luck telling overweight Joe Sportsfan eating hot wings at his local Appleby's in his football jersey to stop doing those things.

Is it a game, yes. Can I catch a football, yes. Can I hit a baseball, yes. Can I make a basket with a hand in my face, yes. Can I sink a seven foot putt, yes. Could I do it professionally, nope.

So some of the logic that has been tossed around is that because players have high salaries, they should have to fit the bill because of structural damage to the building they work in?

Absolutely ridiculous. By that logic, a factory worker would have to pay for damage to a factory if there is a fire. The players are in no way liable for damage to the Metrodome. I suppose the Saints players should have foot the bill for the damage to Superdome caused by Katrina?

Sabby touched on it. The overwhelming majority of the people on this planet do not possess the athletic ability of play professional sports, therefore, their services are in demand.
DM's statement was that there are many more individuals that excel in academic fields, teachers, scientists, doctors, and so on. Yes, they may be entitled to higher compensation, the truth is, they are compensated fine. The individuals at the tops of those field are also of an overwhelming minority, just like the athletes and they control their salaries all the same. The difference is, people aren't lined up at MIT to watch a mathamatics professor solve a proof.

Because of the system that is in place, primarly the NCAA, I have little problem with the athletes maximizing their potential wages, particularly since the governing body of college athletic treats them as indentured servants during their peak athletic years.

Depends on who stands the gain the most revenue based on the use of the building and who actually owns it. Lets say that something like this happened to the Cowboys stadium or Yankee Stadium, I would have no problem with the saying that Jerry Jones or the Steinbrenners fitting the bill. If it happened to a college building, such as the Carrier Dome (Syracuse University), they should have to cover the repair cost. If the building was a civic center, or munciple building that an athletic team leased to play games, then, yes, the tax payers should have to cover repair costs.

Keep in mind, I'm sure all of these buildings are heavily insured, so the up front repair costs to Joe Citizen, or owner are going to be very little. Ultimately, the citizen will end up paying for this anyways with increased insurance premiums.

Ignoring all the crap about who gets paid what and such the only important issue is if the average person gets screwed for this or not. JG brought up how a similar situation happened in Canada because the people in charge were being cheap and went with an inflatable dome instead of a real one. I'm not sure who ended up eating that cost but in both cases they should've known better. Using an inflatable dome in an area well known for heavy snow is just asking for it. Maybe whoever signed off on that decision should be forced to pay.

If someone wanted to pay you 1 million a year for your job I'm sure you'd accept.
But I want nothing to do with millions of dollars. I can't eat it, I can't enjoy it. Money only brings avarice, avarice brings only suffering.
In all honesty, I wouldn't do a single thing with one million dollars, short of making sure my family is well taken care of, and those less fortunate were able to share in my wealth. Then I'd deal with giving what I want to myself.

I'd also assume something was seriously wrong if I was paid millions of dollars to be a high-school student.
If you find someone willing to pay you that much for playing video games go for it. I wouldn't go around telling others you didn't deserve it.
I would not demand so much, I wouldn't demand a single dollar for playing video games. I wouldn't feel I deserved it.
I would. Being paid millions to play anything is more than anyone deserves. It will likely end up costing tax payers, I doubt those people making all that money would be willing to foot the bill for it.
The problem isn't players being willing to accept the pay. It is people being willing to give it to them.
Exactly.

@Everyone: Seriously? If Bill Gates wants to pay some guy 5 million a year to sing Mary Had a Little Lamb what business is it of yours? It's Gates' money, he's allowed to spend it anyway he wants as long as he's not breaking any laws.
Not my business, but if the knowledge of such a thing was public knowledge I would openly oppose it. It would all be futile, but I can't just watch as such things happen and not speak at the very least.

Ah, so you feel that employers should be forced into paying their employees less because you've deemed their services less valuable than the actual employer has?No, I don't have a problem with the employees or the employers. What they are doing makes sense. It is the customer. I am incapable of understanding how so many people put such a high price tag on the pass time of spectator sports.

Most of them are probably incapable of understanding how I can spend so much time on my hobbies, though. I find the disconnect interesting.
