RATATATATATATATATAT!

I just finished one of the finest First Person Shooters I've ever played, simply titled 'Black' {short for Black Operations} on Playstation 2, and I have chills.

The realism of this game is uncanny - and to give you an idea of what I mean, I own games from the Medal of Honor, Modern Warfare, and S.O.C.O.M. series, but Black takes the prize.

Now I realize I'm talking about old stuff here.
After all this game is fully 5 years old now and its successors must be even more realistic and detailed.
But for those of you who are still playing the old systems like I am, this game is definitely worth adding to your FPS collection.

The end came too soon, I wanted so much more ...

I love a good ol' first person shooter. The CoD series is great!

Ive never heard of Black though.

Thanks, Chris, I forgot to mention the Call of Duty series.
I've got some of them too, with Big Red One being my favorite.
The 'Dragon's Teeth' level was intense.

Not to put COD down, but you know how you're sort of 'led along' on a certain pathway, like in a standard RPG?
It's fine and all, but I much prefer the free - roaming style of Black and S.O.C.O.M. where you can go pretty much where you want {and cause what mischief you want} within mission parameters.
Only as you pass major checkpoints or go down broken stairs or ladders do you get cut off from previous areas; this is extremely nice since you can go back to pick up health paks and other items you left behind.

Doesn't look too bad. I tend to enjoy FPSs that are more over the top.

Moved to All other games.

Looks good for a PS2 game but it does pale in comparison to modern FPS games like MW2-

Also the AI in Black looks pretty stupid. They just keep moving towards you when they get hit, no cover and no reaction. Unless I missed something?

It is only PS2, after all.

ONE review called it 'an 80's action film' where 'everything explodes, and enemies go flying in all directions'.
I agree.
When I was talking about the realism I meant the weapons and environment, mainly.

So, is Modern Warfare 2 on PC?
{edit}
Looks good, but please tell me you can turn off that cheesy music.

I believe it's also on the X-box 360 Degrees.

Yeah it's on pretty much every platform, even Blackberries.

On a Blackberry?
Good luck seeing that sniper with the RPG hiding in the window somewhere if you're playing on a 3 X 5 screen {or smaller}.

I assume it's a watered down version like the Wii one. It's not called MW2 on the Wii but it's supposed to be a very similar version "optimized" for Wii. In other words it looks like you're playing on Gamecube and the multiplayer is a joke.

Better Gamecube than PS2, most of the time.
I think I've talked about the same - title games I've gotten for the PS2 and the GC and ended up taking the PS2 ones back or exchanged them?
Not EVERY time, but enough to notice that the little GC has got it where the graphics are concerned.
Full screen, full motion DVD? - not much.
The most I've seen so far has been on Star Wars: Rogue Squadron.

Anyways, what other retro First Person Shooter games do you guys recommend?
I hear HALO is pretty good, but exclusive to X - box.
For that matter, is X - box worth owning, when compared with the PS2 or GC?

It's all worth it just to have some feel-good control.

If you say so.

@JG- Xbox might be good for you since you seem to really enjoy FPS. That being said you can get most of the mainstream FPS on PC.

Thanks DB, I know that the best gaming is generally for PC, but the catch is that you need massive RAM and video card RAM to play games at any decent level.

I only have a base model PC that can't even render Age of Empires 3 {although to be honest I didn't like it as much as #2 and got rid of it anyhow.} so playing something newer is obviously out of the question.

At any rate I like playing on consoles, or at least that's what I'm used to so there you have it.

So the X Box is pretty good for FPS games, eh?
I already know the fame of Halo {I even remember some guy had a tattoo on his arm of the logo in a gaming magazine back when}, but what other titles stand out in your mind?

My experiene with MW on the Wii was excellent: very short wait times, no lag at all, no connection issuses, great control system, don't see why it would be concidered a joke.

I love the FPS genre. I'd recommend the Medal Of Honor series and the Battlefield series on PC

@JG- If you want a console for FPS get 360 or PS3 to a lesser extent.

@Steven- Have you tried it on 360 or PS3 for comparison? How is the matchmaking using the Wiis online? Is there still no voice chat and an inexcusable lack of any common features?

I played for about 5 minutes on a Ps3, not enough to compare really.
The match making? Not sure what you mean, there where at least a dozen types of matches.
No voice chat no.
Not sure what common features your refering too.

A simple explanation as to why it's "a joke" was all I was looking for. A well thought out post, with a underlying tone of the fact that I'm an idiot wasnt necessary.

My point was that I didnt understand what could warrant calling it a joke, when my experience was very enjoyable, especially concidering I'm not a fan of fps's.

I never played Modern Warfare on the Wii, but I played World At War on the Wii. It was actually pretty fun. The online was pretty good, too. I mean, it's not even close to the same kind of game as the 360 versions really, but it's awesome anyway. It plays to the Wii's strengths I would say.

Also, I like Black. I played that game long after it came out, and I was still impressed by it. The live action cut scenes are pretty awesome, and the game play is a lot of fun.

@steven- I wasn't trying to make it sound like you're an idiot. I call it a joke like I call all Wii mulitplayer a joke. From my experience online with the Wii it's the most bare bones set up I've ever seen. I find it inexcusable when PCs have been doing so much more for so much longer and the other systems are catching up to that fast. The Wii online is only good if you have no idea what you're missing out on, imo. That was my point.

Okay, well I guess it's a case of I liked it the way it was. I've only played a few games online, to avoid the horrible addictviness of some of the games I suppose. And not to sound like the fox that couldnt reach the grapes, but I suspect I'd prefer not to chat with a bunch of strangers yelling obscenities all the time.

Black update/ weird glitch?
Ok, when you play the game initially there are 3 difficulty settings:

Easy - primary objectives only, lots of health paks, completion unlocks nothing.

Normal - primary and secondary objectives with a normal amount of health paks.
Completion unlocks silver weapons.

Hard - no health paks, primary and secondary objectives.
Completion unlocks silver weapons and Black Ops difficulty option.

NOW, just now, when I went back to play some more of this awesome game, I noticed something interesting had happened:

Even though I completed the game on the 'Easy' difficulty setting, I somehow unlocked the silver weapons - but that's not all - I also now have unlimited ammo for all picked up weapons!!

Anyone else seen this?

That isn't as common as people make it out to be. It's just like watching the news, they only report the bad stuff really because it's more interesting. If you play a lot of the big name FPS games like MW2 you'll encounter it but most other games are usually pretty cool.

Sorry JG I never played this game, just chatting offtopically.
