I was just wondering who else is a fan of this great series. Which games have you played/owned/beaten? Which one is your favorite?

Strangely enough, despite how much I enjoy JRPGs, I've never gotten around to playing these. So, why is it good, and what one would I do best to pick up?

Wall-of-text warning
The series is known for it's great music. The games are also pretty easy to pick up. The first one I suggest is Book 1 & 2 for the TurboGrafx CD (if you have a Wii, you can purchase it on the Virtual Console). If you can't get ahold of either, try to pick up the DS remake or the PSP remake of 1 & 2 (whenever it is available). The gameplay is simplistic, which may be great for some people. Instead of having an attack button, you simply ram into your enemies strategically (not head-on, but from the side or behind). This makes grinding fairly quick and easy.

A word of warning though, the DS version has an attack button though and the gameplay is slightly different. However, the core game is the same. However, if you are into downloading torrents and/or importing, there is a translation patch for YS I Eternal and Ys II Eternal.

Now, to avoid another wall of text, I'll take it from the first to the last game to briefly explain how each game is.

Ys I - (PC, Famicom, Sega Master System, TurboGrafx/PC-Engine CD, Wii Virtual Console, DS, PSP) See above for gameplay; there are many different remakes and versions of this game.

Ys II - See Ys I.

Ys III: Wanderers from Ys - (PC, Famicom, TurboGrafx/PCEngine CD, SNES, Genesis) Sidescrolling gameplay similar to Adventure of Link. This game is a love it or hate it game.

Ys IV - There are two different versions, "Dawn of Ys" (PCEngine CD) and "Mask of the Sun" (SNES/Super Famicom). Both are great and return to the gameplay style of I and II. They are Japanese-only, but fans have translation-patched the games to English.

Ys V - (SNES) Japanese-only, not translated into English yet. Overhead Zelda-style gameplay with a jump button and attack button.

Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim - (PC, PS2, PSP) Gameplay similar to V. First Ys released in America since III. Playable on PC, PS2 and PSP systems. However, the PSP version (even though I haven't played this version) seems to have some infamous load times, so try this version at your own risk.

Ys Origin - Japanese-only, PC-only. A prequel to the series, having the same gameplay as VI.

Ys: Oath in Felghana - (PC, PSP; coming soon to American PSPs) A remake of III. Same story, updated music, but same gameplay as VI and Origin.

Ys Seven - (PSP) Direct sequel to VI, similar gameplay but different look.

I would suggest to work your way down the list to whatever you can access. If you end up not liking III, don't worry because Oath in Felghana rectifies that situation.

Phew, there's my schpeel on the Ys series.

Okay, I'll look into it. The load times for Ark of Napishtim are only infamous on the PSP

Looks interesting to me, I'll see what I can do.

I played/owned/beat Ys: Ancient Ys Vanished Omens (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/game/4752/) ยป Sega (http://retrouprising.com/game-menu/sega/) around 1991. I remember enjoying it alot at the time but it has been so long that I don't actually remember the game.

Yeah I also remember playing one of them and liking it but I don't even remember which one anymore. It might've been the Sega one, seems like the right time period.

you simply ram into your enemies strategically

Tactical rape?
And no, that isn't a joke, this is seriously what it sounds like to me.

It's even funnier when you are overleveled and the enemies just disappear as soon as you walk into them.

My favorite is YS 3, both the snes version and the remake. I have played book 1and 2 remakes on the ds as well as the ark on ps2 and origin on the pc.

I am very exited about the release of ys 7 on psp.

not just the ys series but falcom has also made "brandish" for the snes which is one of my favorite rpg's of all time. there is a remake of brandish for the psp, which I emported. I am still hoping for a us release.

GO FALCOM!

I've heard of Brandish but I never got around to trying it. What makes it so good?

It came out in Japan over a year ago, and it has not been announced for release outside of Japan, so I doubt there will be a US release. Especially since there have already been two YS games released abroad on the PSP, they probably would have gotten around to it by now, if they planned on it.
