Story:
YouTube - Streets of Rage 2 Intro
It's been over a year has passed since Mr. X's Crime Syndicate attempted to take
over the city, and thing were returning to normal, until Adam, a hero from the first
Streets of Rage, was kidnapped. After realizing that Mr. X and his organization
was to blame, Axel and Blaze (two other heros from the first Streets of Rage) join
forces with Adams younger brother Eddie (or 'Skate') and local pro-wrestler Max
to stop them at all costs.
Gameplay:
YouTube - Streets Of Rage 2 - Stage 1 - Axel
Streets of Rage 2 plays like most other beat 'em ups, you go from area to area
taking out enemies until you are allowed to advance. SoR2 has 4 different
characters to choose from, Max is the strongest, Skate is the fastest, Axel has the
most abilities, and Blaze is a balance of all the stats. Skate also has the special
ability to dash in any direction that's double tapped.
Streets of Rage incorporates a three button setup, Jumping, Attacking and Special
Moves, making it similar to Final Fight. But in Streets of Rage 2, players can either
use a massively powerful special attack that drains some of your health, or a semi-
special attack that does less damage, but drains no health, which is done by double
tapping a direction and pressing the attack button.
Streets of Rage 2 also is long, with 8 well done action levels to play through, but
unlike Final Fight, there are no Bonus Stages to relax from the action.
Graphics:
Streets of rage 2 has outstanding graphics, the city bridge, the carnival, and the
baseball stadium all look beautiful and it's one of the best looking games on the
enitre Genesis.
Streets of Rage 2 also boasts impressive 16-bit mist effects on the third level.
Sound:
The Genesis is infamous for having an inferior sound chip to the SNES, but Streets
of Rage 2 has one of (if not) the greatest soundtracks on the entire Genesis
platform. In fact, the music from Streets of Rage 2 was so acclaimed, Yuzo
Koshiro (the composer of Streets of Rage 1 and 2) was invited to nightclubs to DJ
for them, and I say he deserved it. The music is truely superb, I didn't believe it
was possible to get this good on the Genesis.
Stage 1-1:
YouTube - Streets of Rage 2 Music - Go Straight (Stage 1-1)
Stage 1-2:
YouTube - Streets of Rage 2 Music - In The Bar (Stage 1-2)
Stage 2-1:
YouTube - Streets of Rage 2 Music - Spin on the Bridge (Stage 2-1)
Stage 3-1:
YouTube - Streets of Rage 2 Music - Dreamer (Stage 3-1)
Stage 4-1:
YouTube - Streets of Rage 2 Music - Under Logic (Stage 4-1)
Stage 5:
YouTube - Streets of Rage 2 Music - Slow Moon (Stage 5)
Stage 6-1:
YouTube - Streets of Rage 2 Music - Wave 131 (Stage 6-1)
Stage 7-1:
YouTube - Streets of Rage 2 Music - Back to the Industry (Stage 7-1)
Stage 7-2:
YouTube - Streets of Rage 2 Music - Expander (Stage 7-2)
Overall:
Many people often debate between which was better, Final Fight or Streets of
Rage 2, but in my opinion, Streets of Rage 2 is superior with smoother gameplay,
outstanding music, and 2 extra levels to playthrough.
But that's my opinion, try out both and make up your own mind.
