View Full Version : Are people sick of Sonic?

I was just thinking about it, and I really don't think we will ever see a truly great sonic game ever again. I honestly think people are just sick of looking at him, and he just continues to try the same song and dance he started with.
I know I'm sick of him, and wouldn't care if he went away forever, what do you guys think?

I could care less. All the newer Sonic games are so bad and boring. It's quite dissapointing. I'll be sticking to Mario and Link from now on :P
I was never into Sonic and honestly I never played anything past Sonic and Tails. Oh wait, Sonic Pinball was fun!

I used to love Sonic's 2D games and the well done Adventure Games, but sadly I have grown
sick of his attrocious games. But Sonic 4 does look awesome.

I think people are just sick of bad Sonic games. I really think that people could go for a really sweet retro 2D game. Old school with really sweet level design. No fancy features. Simple gameplay, good chaos emerald levels.

I liked the Genesis Sonic games but not because of Sonic himself. I liked the gameplay and the levels. I always thought of Sonic as Sega trying way too hard to appeal to kids.

Sega should kill him and never make a game about him again. Or, just sell all rights to Sonic to Nintendo since they could probably do better.

What makes him any different from Mario, Mega Man or any of those characters? Sonic is sonic. Love him or hate him, he's never going to die. :-\

It's not a question of love or hate.
Nintendo and Capcom have both managed to keep Mario and Megaman relevant to gaming for 25 years. Sega has failed atrociously at this.

It took Megaman 9/10 Mario wii to get them to do Sonic 4. =/
I'm sick of him, love his classic outings, have hope for Sonic 4..

For a game promoting speed and "blast processing" there wasn't much of speed since whenever you ran fast you'd be hit by an enemy.
Didn't people give up on Sonic like at Sonic Heroes?

I personally lost interest in Sonic games when the first one on the Dreamcast was released, sure I played it with my older brother, but the game just wasn't all that fun when not playing with your older brother who you only see a couple of times a year {if you're lucky}. The only one I enjoyed since then was Sonic Rush on the DS, and I liked it because it had the same feel as the ones on the Genesis. High-speed 2D platforming, where once you got to full speed, you'd probably crash into an enemy.
I was never a fan of Sonic, or really Mario for that matter.
Ditto.

I, myself, was never a big fan of Mario or Sonic as characters, but the games I enjoyed, or at least back during the 16-bit days, not so much after the jump to 3D.

Good point Seahawk. I hadn't been thinking of it that way. Sonic is a major fail in that case.

Because Sonic is stuck in the rift of mediocrity. Put into bad game after bad game, just so Sega can make a few dollars. These days Sonic games try to be innovative, but that isn't what we need, we need a high-speed 2D platforming character, not a 3D, hold your Wii-mote vertical and move it up and down, look at him turn into a werewolf, now shake faster, crappy game character.

I don't like Sonic. Frankly I don't think a game that let's you move so fast should make you have to try to move so slow.

Hence Sonic not being as big as Mario nor Megaman.

Sonic never could be not matter what. Not unless they'd left well enough alone.
I beg to differ. I think Sonic could have been big had Sega done a better job with their mascot. Sonic is pretty well known even to people who never really played the games. Like me for instance.

I'll allow that Sega could have done a better job. Just remember that Sega had problems once Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft started putting out consoles and games that were better. Still, that is no excuse for Sega mishandling their mascot.

Like not making him a blue hedgehog. Sure it was cool at first, but then the art style they used changed, and now he is a blue hedgehog that looks like he was drawn by a second grader.
He went from being as cool as a blue hedgehog could ever look:

To looking stupid, like this:

Although I appreciate the idea of a blue hedgehog as a mascot, more than a moderately obese plumber, with a phallic nose. He looses weight each time around, but his nose gets even more phallic.
Currently he is in decent shape, with a very phallic nose.

Oh, I thought it was normal...
Just kidding, there, but onward I move:
That nose shape {long, sticking straight out, and lacking a bridge} is often described as phallic, the Japanese seem to like to give characters phallic noses, like the mythical demons known as Tengu.
A traditional wooden Tengu mask.
http://www.masksoftheworld.com/images/Japan-Mask-Tengu-2-a.jpg
The Tengu initially had a beak, but people began to depict them representing monks who lived in the mountains, so the nose had to be made to look human, but still resemble a beak, so they gave them the phallic nose. Sometimes they had red faces, and sometimes they didn't.
And much like the people who follow the Old Testament {and their demons}, this is what they really believed. That any monk on the mountain could easily be a Tengu waiting to kill them and eat them or something.

Yeah I know all that but still, Marios nose is not what I'd call phallic.

I know it doesn't look like a phallus, but it is described as phallic.
At least he doesn't have the prominent features of another figure from Japanese folklore. Seriously, this would be disturbing on Mario:

This would be a Tanuki, similar to the Tanooki suit, a Tanuki could supposedly turn to stone.

You could have put an NSFW...and just a plain old don't open.

I put a NSFW on it. I wasn't sure if I should remove it or not but I figured it's considered art to some people so it's passable.

It's not gentlemanly to speak of.
Demon-Mask

NSFW is fine, so long as you aren't stating what it is. It is art, not just to some people, but it is just art. It's no worse than that statue of a naked dude, or those paintings of babies {both genders} with angel wings, with exposed genitalia. Or those countless pieces of artwork from Greece and Rome, of naked men throwing disks around.
Why would I be gentlemanly, I said the word "phallus" {and variants of it, like "phallic"} seven times in this thread alone. I guess I could have used much more offensive words for it. But I did it mostly for the surprise, so that way someone might click the spoiler, and see what it is.
It could be worse, to find that particular picture {I wanted to show that particular one} I saw at least ten different pictures of more modern takes on it, with anthropomorphic Tanuki, as opposed to the traditional, non-anthropomorphic Tanuki.

What could possibly happen if we derail the thread? If steve has an issue then I'll throw him a tissue but if anyone wants to get back to the subject they need just speak of it.
Demon-Mask
08-17-2010, 10:10 PM
Exactly, Sonic is less interesting than phallic characters in Japanese folklore, I think that is part of the problem with him, and why he hasn't remained relevant through the years, because almost everything is more interesting than him.
Maybe if Sonic was a neon-orange platypus, with a much better name, he would still be interesting. The games wouldn't have to change at all, save for the changing of Sonic to our yet to be named platypus.
Dudebro
08-17-2010, 10:14 PM
The reason I said that is because this is a topic about Sonic. If you want to discuss phallic characters make a topic for it. I don't think that's unreasonable.
Demon-Mask
08-17-2010, 10:21 PM
I know, I just tied it back to the topic. If we can get off topic onto a topic about phallic characters, then it is likely that they are more interesting than Sonic, and Sonic isn't very interesting.
He is not doing so well because he is uninteresting.

I wouldn't say I'm tired of them, but the newer ones are horrible. Sonic is a wolf, Sonic in a party game that screws up fifty million times, sonic with a sword. I mean come on, a sword.

I think it's a great idea but it should've been obvious to Sega a long time ago. They seem totally unaware of their faults and I doubt they'll see the light now.
Also the way that guy says Sega bugs me. What accent is that?

Problem is that Sonic is himself a brand, the should do what Nintendo did with Donkey Kong Country. Include Sonic as a guide, and then introduce a new character, and henceforth a new ip. I like the guys ideas a lot, but even still I'm not sure it is enough. A simple platformer in 2016 is a tough sell. Look at Rayman, great reviews, gameplay and graphics, but still sell meager amounts. Todays games need more than they did 20 years ago, collectibles, online functionality, achievements, multiplayer... All things that the modern gamer seems to take for granted.
Australian.
I think the old TV commercials pronounced it See-Ga MegaDrive and Say-Ga Genesis.
I like the jump attacks starting at 7:20 in the video. A 2D Game that is hyper fast, with complex jumps, attacks, moves that fit into the action-puzzle genre with a Matrix style of camera and time shifting would be awesome.
I don't really like the ring/backpack idea though.
