One of the most controversial videogames ever released, Mortal Kombat is a 2D fighter in the mold of Street Fighter II: Champion Edition, but is much more graphically violent. The game introduced the concept of Fatality Moves, which lets a victorious fighter gloat over a dazed opponent by performing a gruesomely primal act, such as ripping out the heart or spinal cord. The tournament, as hosted by evil wizard Shang Tsung, consists of seven digitized fighters engaging in a series of one-on-one fights. The winner must battle Shang's inhuman champion Goro, and then the wizard himself. A five-button control system allows for blocking and a variety of high and low punches and kicks. In addition, each fighter is equipped with a number of special moves, such as fireballs or shadow kicks. Despite its reputation as an overly bloody, mindlessly inane button-masher, Mortal Kombat is a lot of fun, especially in two-player mode.

Similar to the Game Boy version, but with major improvements, (color, faster gameplay, and tighter control). Like its 16-bit counterpart, the game was censored unless a cheat code had been entered. It lacked Kano and Reptile and had only two arenas.

Battles are fought over the best of 3 rounds. At the end of a round a voice instructs the winner to 'finish him' and players have only a couple of seconds to try and execute their character's 'fatality', which sees the winner killing the loser in a spectacular and grisly fashion.

Mortal Kombat was renowned as the first fighting game to use digitized characters and blood (as opposed to the hand-animated, more cartoon-like graphics of competing games). Mortal Kombat was developed as a reaction to the popular Capcom game "Street Fighter II - The World Warrior", with simpler controls and digitized graphics. Some say the game's graphic violence was gratuitous, and was only included in order to generate a public outcry and controversy that would increase publicity for the game.

Although highly controversial, the mix of realism and violence propelled Mortal Kombat to the height of popularity. An example of the game's innovations was the Fatality, a special finishing move executed against a dying opponent to create an even more gruesome death. For example, one character would grasp a defeated, wobbling opponent by the head, then rip the head and spine out of the opponent's body, which then crumpled to the ground in a pool of blood. Another aspect of game-play that became a recurring element in games that followed was the so-called 'juggle', where a series of moves could be executed against an opponent who was kept in mid-air by the force of the attacks, and who hence had no defense against further attacks as long as the 'juggle' could be maintained.

The original concept of Mortal Kombat was modeled after the Jean-Claude Van Damme movie 'Bloodsport', which is a cult classic martial arts film. The character of Johnny Cage is directly modeled after Frank Dux, Van Damme's character in the movie. Johnny Cage's film-star motif is an obvious link to this. Cage also wears the same costume (plus shoes) that Van Damme's character wore in the final battle of the movie. Cage's splits punch was originally seen in Bloodsport during the fight against the Sumo wrestler. Since Midway was unable to get Van Damme for this game, they kept the same kumite/martial arts movie concept and added the Kombat story.

Mortal Kombat was the first video game to have an official release date countdown in U.S./U.K. and Australia. This momentous day was known as 'Mortal Monday'.

The heads used in the background of the first stage and in the spike pit are actually those of the programmers themselves! The statue of Buddha in the background of the courtyard stage was actually a lawn ornament from a neighbor's yard.

During the fighting scenes that take place on the stone platform above the field of sharp spikes, if you look closely at the glowing moon in the background, you will sometimes see a silhouette fly past it. These shadows will either be Peter Pan and the Darling children, a witch on a broomstick, a kite, a blimp, a rocket, a flying saucer, or Santa Claus in his reindeer-pulled sleigh. The shadows appear about every 6 games.

Liu Kang is Midway's homage to Bruce Lee.

Raiden really is the Japanese God of Thunder. His appearance in myth is quite different though : he has red skin and a demonic face, his feet have two claws on them, and he carries either a wheel or drums on his back. He also is thought to eat human navels so people are advised to lie on their stomachs during storms.

In the Courtyard stage, above the red door on the right side, you can see "Pac-Man", a ghost and a power pellet carved on the stone.

The Mortal Kombat fighters, plus several new ones, return for a tournament held by the evil Shang Tsung of the Oddworld. The action is one-on-one as before, and famed for its high level of violence and blood (other than the sanitized Nintendo version). There are 3 difficulty levels.

To win the main tournament, you must beat each of the other human players, before taking on Sheng Tsung, Kintaro and finally Shao Kahn. Players have a range of punches and kicks available, as well as flying kicks, uppercuts, roundhouses, and the special moves, which vary for each player. These include throws, uppercuts, long-distance bullets, bicycle kicks and a teleport feature.

Mortal Kombat II picks up after the first one, with different stories on why the heroes and villians have returned to fight. With the additions of new characters, and fatalities, there are also babalities and hidden characters. Play as either Baraka, Sub Zero, Johnny Cage, Scorpion, Liu Kang, Kitana, Mileena, Jax, Kung Lao, Reptile, Shang Tsung, or Raiden, and open the portal to Earth, or close it for all time. The fate of the Earth rests in your hands.

The forces of light have destroyed the forces of darkness in the Shaolin tournament, and the warriors returned home. Shang Tsung wasn't so lucky. He returned to the Outworld, where his emperor, Shao Kahn was prepared to put him to death for the death of Goro. In a moment of desperation, Shang Tsung devises a new plan. He will hold another tournament, this time in the Outworld, where the environment isn't so hospitible. There the earth warriors will have to face Shao Kahn himself, and in turn, have no chance of victory whatsoever. Then the portal to the Earth Realm will be opened for eternity, and Shao Kahn will lead his army to conquer the Earth.

The gameplay of Mortal Kombat II is an extension of the previous game. Normal moves have been expanded: a crouching punch was added, and low and high kicks became differentiated be it crouching or standing up; the roundhouse kick was made more powerful and knocks opponents across the screen. Additionally returning characters gained new special moves and the game marked introduction of multiple Fatalities (post-match animations of the victorious characters executing their defeated foes), as well as additional, non-lethal finishing moves to the franchise. However, each character still shared generic attributes

There are many worlds besides our own, many realms where both good and evil hold sway. For centuries, Shang Tsung of the Outworld has sought to control the Mortal Kombat tournament for his own ends. Now a new champion must arise from our world that will fight to the bitter end and put an end to Shang Tsung's ambitions. This video game series was so popular that it spawned both a live-action and an animated TV series, and a live-action movie starring Christopher Lambert as Rayden.

It is the considered opinion of most video game experts that the MK games are more hype than they are substance. Their opinion is that they are flashy SF2 clones that don't always deliver the goods. That didn't keep Midway from selling copies by the bucketful, and the Mortal Kombat franchise has been one of its most profitable ventures since its inception. Perhaps its reputation as a violent game with lots of blood-letting during the fights is what gave the series its overhyped reputation.

Mortal Kombat II, the contest moves to the Outworld as Sonya Blade continues her pursuit of Kang - this introduced several new characters and is generally considered to be the best of the Genesis series.

Mortal Kombat 3 builds further on the gameplay of the previous game. A "Run" button, accompanied by a "Run" meter, was introduced. This was primarily to address concern from fans who thought that the previous games gave too much of an advantage to the defending player. The Run meter is drained by running (the character cannot run backwards, only forwards) and by performing combos.

"Chain combos", also known as pre-programmed combos (labeled "dial-a-combos") were also introduced. Chain combos are preprogrammed button presses that cannot be interrupted once one hit connects (e.g., one of Sonya's chain combos is HK-HK-HP-HP-LP-b+HP). Some chain combos end with an uppercut or other move that knocks the opponent into the air, so that more punishment can be dealt via a traditional juggle combo. To please players of various skill levels, a "Choose Your Destiny" screen appears in 1-player mode. This new feature allowed player-selectable difficulty.

For the first time, certain levels were interactive by allowing characters to be uppercutted through the ceiling where both characters would continue the battle in a different stage. This could alter the game's level cycle. Both normal uppercuts and uppercuts that are part of a ground combo would result in a level change. Kung Lao's "Whirl Wind Spin" move would also have the same effect. However, if the final hit of a round happens to be an uppercut (i.e., the character is defeated by an uppercut), there is no level change.

Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 is a special edition Mortal Kombat 3 that includes many of the features not included in the final edition due to limitations. First released in the Arcades in 1995, the storyline yet again traces Shao Kahn's ploy to take over the Earth Realm, this time by the resurrection of his wife Sindel by his shadow priests.

Brace yourself and pick from 23 instantly selectable fighters from across the universe, faces both old and new to the series. Male Ninjas include Sub-Zero (masked form), Reptile, Noob, Ermak, Scorpion, and Rain. Female Ninjas include Jade, Mileena, and Kitana.

Cyber-Ninjas new to the Mortal Kombat series include Sektor, Cyrax, and Smoke. Other fighters consist of the street wise Stryker, American Indian NightWolf, Special Ops Sonya and Jax, escapee Kano, the unmasked Sub-Zero, Kung Lao, evil queen Sindel, priest sorcerer Shang Tsung, Bruce Lee look-a-like Lui Kang and the clinically dead Kabal.

Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 features three modes of play: the standard one-on-one affair; two-player, two-on-two battles; and the newly added tournament mode, which allows up to eight players to take turns fighting in a knockout competition to find out who is the true champion.

For those of you who are content to play Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 in single-player fashion, players can choose from four destinies (novice, warrior, master, and master two), each with distinctive battle plans, though the final three battles always involve an endurance match, Motaro and Shao Kahn in battle.

Fighting locations implemented in this special edition of Mortal Kombat 3 include a desert (with Cyrax stuck in quick sand, endlessly wiggling to save himself), a New York street, a Portal entrance, Shao Kahn's Lair and the realm portal, among other new and old backdrops. Game options include handicaps, violence control (blood and fatalities), full control configuration, and the ability to select from five difficulty levels.

Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3's only real new features are the assortment of old characters that were not in the original Mortal Kombat 3. Also, there are some new backgrounds and finishing moves, along with the eight-player tournament mode. New secret fighters and codes have been added for MK enthusiasts to try and work out.
