A 2D platformer starring the titular circus bat, Aero the Acrobat spans 24 levels, across four themed environments. In a bizarre hostile takeover attempt by an evil billionaire, the circus has been rigged with all manner of traps and devices, and overrun by clown henchmen whose sole purpose is to get rid of Aero. Using his ability to glide for limited periods, Aero must maneuver across tightropes and moving platforms, among a host of other impediments along his journey. To aid him in his quest to defeat the villainous Edgar Ektor, Aero has at his disposal a devastating spin attack, and once found Aero can throw projectile stars at enemies. Health and extra life power-ups can be found littered about the levels.

Objectives change across the many levels, and require Aero to jump through a succession of hoops or ride in log-flumes, roller coasters, and the like, while avoiding obstacles and jumping chasms. At the conclusion of certain environments Aero will face a giant boss character, whom he must defeat to continue onwards. Bonus levels take the form of a Mode 7 high-dive, where Aero must maneuver through a series of blue loops en route to the pool of water on the ground. To make this more difficult, wind machines will appear from the sides of the screen and try to blow Aero away from the loops.

Introducing our three chief protagonists: Aero the Acrobat, a daredevil bat who is the star of the circus; Edgar Ektor, clown prince and mean guy extraordinaire; and Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel, Ektor's chief henchman whose sense of duty and loyalty seem strangely misplaced.

Probably the most concerted effort by a software house in cloning the success of the Sonic series. Gets old fast, ridiculous in places, but you never lack for action. It sold by the bucketful when it was first released.

Aero the Acrobat has a really annoying circus music soundtrack & never quite lives up to it's promise as a Sonic beater.

Zero The Kamikaze Squirrel is a spin-off of the Aero the Acro-Bat series.

The plot begins halfway through the plot of "Aero the Acrobat 2". Zero receives a note from his girlfriend Amy that evil lumberjack Jaques Le sheets is destroying his forest homeland in order to use the trees for printing money. Zero, despite the protests not to do it from his master Edgar Ektor (who tells him nothing is more important than his mission with him, notably referring to Ektor's plan B from Aero 2), decides to return home and stop Le Sheets (which explains why Zero is absent from Ektor's side in the Aero 2 final battle). When arriving his home island, Zero's plane is shot down and crashes on the beach, so he must make his way to the forest on his own.

In Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel, a spinoff from the Aero the Acrobat games, Zero gets the chance to play hero for a change - the best of the series, it compares well with the original Sonic in its own way.
