In Blackthorne, a horizontal and vertical scrolling platform game, take on the role of Kyle Blackthorne, returning to his home world to rid it of the evil forces that deposed his family. Travel through rain forests, caverns, underground complexes, and stranger locations. Face mutant beasts, hideous goblins, renegade human bandits, and a selection of other nasties that have enslaved his people. Armed with a shotgun and ready to wreak havoc, Kyle jumps, climbs, shoots, and demolishes his way through the levels. Played in standard platform fashion, Blackthorne also places a lot of emphasis on puzzle solving. You'll need quick wits and quick reflexes to survive this title from Interplay's 1994 holiday lineup.

The Blues Brothers, Saturday Night Live skit turned feature film, is now a videogame for the Super NES. You control deadpan musical performers Jake and Elwood as they attempt to escape from an evil jukebox.

Looking cool in their dark suits, dark shades and black hats, the Blues Brothers will journey through sewers, warehouses, stores and the suburbs of a number of large cities (34 in one-player mode and 25 in two-player mode) in order to reach their final destination -- their first paying gig.

In a one-player game you control either or both characters; in the two-player simultaneous game, you and a friend must decide who gets to play which brother. Jake is fast, but a poor jumper, and Elwood can leap very high, but has limited speed. Other activities the characters perform include swimming, throwing each other, riding elevators, climbing stairs, switching electric arcs, walking on ice and, of course, hopping on platforms.

As you make your way through this side-scrolling game, you must ward off a number of enemies, such as dogs, man traps, mosquitoes, lawnmowers, snails and dodo birds. Your primary weapons of choice are records that you can throw and super records, which are especially destructive.

In some areas of the game, you will need to use certain objects such as springs and mushrooms that act as trampolines, and a friendly snake that you can ride and control. To increase the time limit in a level, you'll need to catch an hourglass. Your goal in each level is to reach the large jukebox.

B.O.B. is in a whole heap of trouble. After the golden robot borrowed his father's car to go out on a date, he somehow crashed into a giant asteroid! Now B.O.B. finds himself stranded on Planet Goth without any means to get home. If things weren't bad enough, the world is filled with androids looking to reduce poor ol' B.O.B. into scrap metal.

Your job is to guide the robot through over 45 stages of futuristic platforming action. Fortunately for you, B.O.B. is a resourceful robot, so you won't find yourself without a few gadgets to help make it through the levels. B.O.B. starts out with three lives, a laser gun (with fifty shots), and an ability to acquire "remotes" giving him new abilities.

In addition to the laser, B.O.B. can upgrade his weapon to a triple-shot, flame-thrower, rocket, bolt, wave, and punch (his fist shoots out for close-range combat). The remotes, which appear as icons somewhere on each level, are as follows: flash (freezes enemy); shield (creates a force field); umbrella (helps B.O.B. glide down from high places); trampoline; helicopter hat (makes B.O.B. fly); and floating bombs.

The object of each level is to find the exit, represented by an orange swirl, before time runs out. You'll receive a password after every three levels and an extra life each time you score 100,000 points. Keep moving, though -- you have to find a new set of wheels so you can make your date!

Boxing Legends of the Ring lets you play as one of the following eight greats in your effort to become champion: "Marvelous" Marvin Hagler, Jake "The Raging Bull" LaMotta, Sugar Ray Robinson, Rocky Graziano, Roberto "Hands of Stone" Duran, Thomas "Hit Man" Hearns, Sugar Ray Leonard, and James "Lights Out" Toney.

Exhibition, Career and Battle of the Legends are the three game modes available, with Career Mode allowing you to create your own boxer and slug through six fights for the Middleweight Belt. Each boxer is rated in punch power, stamina and chin, depending on his style of fighting (street, military or Olympic).

After selecting a style, you'll receive ten strength points to divide among the three categories. For every fight you win, you'll earn two more strength points, while every loss will give you one point for experience. Career progress can be saved via passwords received after each fight.

The game features a perspective just over your boxer's shoulder as your opponent looks toward the screen. Moves such as jabs, uppercuts, hooks, blocks and ducks are all part of the fighting, as are clinches, allowing boxers to hug their opponents to regain stamina.

Other notable features include: super punches earned after each round or knockdown (up to three); optional "blackouts" causing the screen to go black after repeated blows to the head; adjustable exhibition rounds from two to twelve per match; instant replay letting you review each knockdown; and different skill levels for either Exhibition or Battle of the Legends game modes (from one to five).

Hundreds of years ago, dragons and dragon warriors protected the land from evil. Perhaps their greatest victory was against the Great Demon, a being that terrorized innocents everywhere by unleashing its legion of monsters. The Dragon of Wisdom taught humans how to find safety while the Dragon of War defeated the Demon in battle, forcing him to return to mist. The Dragon of Good Luck trapped the Demon in an underground cavern.

Unfortunately, the dragons and their human companions, the dragon warriors, have faded into the annals of history and are now merely legends. Only one dragon warrior remains, and he has set off on a dangerous mission in search of the last dragons. Before leaving, he told his son Remeer that he must continue the hunt for dragons, especially if he does not return. Sadly, Remeer hears the fateful tone in his father's voice and begins preparing for the most important task of his young life -- that of hunting for and finding the lost dragons.

Remeer is the star of Brain Lord and the only character you can control, but he does have an entourage follow him during his journey. Kashian is a bounty hunter and adventurer with the skills of a witch and warrior. Barness, a deeply spiritual man, began hunting dragons after being inspired by an omen in the stars.

When it comes to self-sacrifice, Rein reigns supreme, using his bounty hunting and warrior skills to mete out justice wherever and whenever he can. Last but not least, Ferris, a witch whose parents were fortunetellers, keeps to herself, but is nevertheless an asset to the group.

As you journey through the various towns and castles in Brain Lord, honoring your father's request that you search for the lost dragons, you must solve many puzzles and do battle with a host of bloodthirsty monsters. To help you defeat the creatures, you can purchase (and later resell) axes, maces, boomerangs, bows, arrows and other weapons.

You will run across nine different Jades in your journey, each one holding a Fairie. The Fairies perform a variety of helpful tasks, such as throw fireballs, release lightning bolts and restore your hit points. You can also acquire shields and armor and up to 13 magic spells of your own.

When maneuvering around the various obstacles that obstruct your pathway, you will find that you can move some types of rocks and barriers. You can also collect keys that are useful for opening locked doors. Other items you will need throughout the game include X-ray glasses, food, warp gates, and herbs. If you need to save your progress or refill your life meter, you can stay at an Inn. If you need information, try talking to a statue. Statues can also save your progress.

To succeed in this game, you must be a Brain Lord -- a being clever enough to make it through the mysteries and challenges you will face. If you don't like your given name, Remeer, you can change it to one of your own choosing. However, the perils and struggles will remain the same.

Though simplistic to the extreme in terms of audio and video, The Brainies fits all the criteria for a good puzzler: it's easy to learn, yet hard to master; it's as addictive as nicotine; and it has responsive, simple controls. Using a cursor, players guide red, yellow, blue, and green Brainies around the screen, nullifying the M&M-like creatures' existence by placing them on sleeping pads of their own color. As players strain their brains through 100 timed levels, bombs, bumpers, and other obstacles will make things difficult. Most importantly, Brainies themselves get in each other's way, but luckily, hearts can be picked up for extra time.

A sequel of sorts to Rival Turf, Brawl Brothers has more enemies and more moves than its progenitor, making it less repetitive and more enjoyable. Rival Turf veterans Hack and Slack make a return engagement, and are aided and abetted by Kazan (a ninja), Wendy (a pro wrestler), and Lord J (a black belt in karate). A special Angry Mode gives injured fighters a burst of energy, giving the game some oomph, and the graphics and music are nice, yet the controls lack the speed, precision, and polish of such games as Streets of Rage, Street Fighter II, and Double Dragon.

Designed by Tetris mastermind Alexey Pajitnov, BreakThru! has players trying to clear a wall of blocks before time runs out. To eliminate blocks, players must click on usergroup of two or more blocks of the same color. The removal of blocks causes other blocks to fall and slide into position and new blocks and special items (such as block-busting sticks of dynamite) to appear from above. As with most puzzle games of this type, the graphics and sound effects are less than dazzling, but the action has that special Pajitnov mix of simplicity and strategy that makes for a compelling, addictive experience.

In the beginning, there was a race of beings who had the power to change into powerful dragons. The Dragon Family lived in peaceful harmony, until the Goddess Tyr appeared. Promising to grant their wishes, the separate clans of the Dragon Family started fighting amongst each other, hoping for the power the Goddess had to offer.

One clan, the Light Dragons, realized that something was amiss and sent a warrior to stop the evils. He was victorious and sealed the Goddess into six keys and spread them across the land. The world recovered from the catastrophic battles, and the Light Dragons grew soft. With this softening, they lost most of their powers and lived as men, but the Dark Dragons were biding their time. Soon a leader rose among the Dark Dragons, named Zog. He set out to destroy the Light Dragons and take the Goddess Keys, and resurrect the evil Goddess. Your journey begins with the destruction of your village. . .

Breath of Fire II takes players into the world of the fantasy RPG, where friends are made, battles are fought, and an intriguing storyline develops with every step the hero makes.

One day you take a nap near the remains of a once great dragon, only to wake and find that both your father and sister are missing. Upon being recieved as an orphan into a local church, you meet and befriend a little theif named Bow. Agreeing that greater things lie in the next village, the two of venture across the country and into a cave. You meet with a fierce monster and all goes black. Years pass like the wind and your childhood is all but a memory of the past. And thus your adventure begins...

Breath of Fire II utilizes the same tried and true over-head perspective and graphics somewhat in the style of Final Fantasy III. The battle modes have differences here and there, but much of the key actions such as attack, magic, defense, item, or special move remain. The game also contains "party building" elements, instead of revolving around a lone, central hero as in the Zelda games.

The game also contains multiple game save slots and the ability to name the main character.

Fully authorized by the NHLPA, Brett Hull Hockey for the Super Nintendo features more than 600 NHL stars (each ranked according to various attributes), including, of course, superstar right-winger Brett Hull. You can play against the computer in an 84-game season, a half season, an 11-game short season , an exhibition match, a 7-game playoff for the championship, or a winner-take-all shootout. A friend can join in on the action for shootouts and exhibition matches. Three-time national Sportscaster of the Year Al Michaels is on hand to provide play-by-play commentary. There are 26 teams represented by city names (lack of NHL involvement means no team names or logos) and two all-star teams. Options and features familiar to hockey fans include icing, face offs, wrist shots, slap shots, offsides, checking, penalties, and fighting. At the end of each hockey match, Brett Hull comments on both teams' performance.

Brett Hull Hockey 95 carries an NHLPA license for real players (based on the 1993-94 season) as you hit the ice for a complete 84-game season. Statistics and standings will be saved to battery, so you can resume your quest for the championship whenever you power up the system.

If season play seems too grueling for you, feel free to jump into an Exhibition game (one or two players) or Playoffs (best of three, five or seven game formats). Award-winning broadcaster Al Michaels will handle the play-by-play as you skate down a diagonal view of the ice. Each player is rated from one to 100 in the following six attributes: skating, shooting, strength, stick handling, defensive skill and aggressiveness.

You can also influence how your players perform by setting each of these attributes for the team before the game. Want a team that's hard to score on? Raise the slider bars for aggressiveness and defensive skill. There is a limited amount of "power" to distribute among the categories, however, so choose wisely.

Options include playing a reduced season (11 or 42 games), changing period length (5, 10 or 20 minutes), toggling penalties and line changes on or off, and playing with or without Al Michaels' commentary. NHL fans take note: Brett Hull Hockey 95 does not feature an NHL license to allow for authentic team names and logos (26 teams are useridentified only by city name).

Lace up those bowling shoes and get ready to play with with the pros in Brunswick World Tournament of Champions. Players can customize their bowler's clothes, handedness, spare ball and primary ball before they compete against 11 professional bowlers in six different tournaments: the Combat Zone Classic, The Quantum Open, The Las Vegas International, The Bayer Brunswick Tournament Players Championship, The Johnny Petraglia Open, and the Brunswick World Tournament of Champions.

You can participate in either a short or long tournament format, which determines how many bowlers you'll face and the number of qualifying games to play before moving on to the next round. The two other game modes include League (singles or team) and Practice, where you can play just one game by yourself. Bowling is performed by using two circular meters: time the button as each meter rises and you'll be able to determine the amount of power and spin. Having trouble? New users can opt to manually set the spin meter to make things easier. Tournament progress can be continued via passwords provided after each game.
