Evil has returned, in the form of Darces the Dark Overlord. Only when the Five Elements are gathered and joined as one can he be defeated and cast out of this world again. Crucial to this task is the Sword of Tores, long thought lost, and the Swords of Magi, whose power are inextricably linked to the Five Elements.

One adventurer steps forward, willing to try where others have failed. Darces, however, is not so lightly overthrown, and monsters have overrun the world, making it difficult to get from town to town without the power to defend oneself . . .

"Dungeon Magic" is a first-person RPG that looks similar to Wizardry games, but instead of the usual turn-based combat you fight your enemies in real time, parrying to avoid their blows and attacking physically or casting offensive magic to hurt them. You explore large outdoor areas, towns, and dungeons, and specialize in five kinds of magic.

Are you clever enough to solve an evil wizard's twisted puzzles? Do you possess the concentration needed to explore a labyrinth of mystery? Should you resist the tempting treasures, defeat the hideous monsters, and escape the devious traps that are hidden throughout the Grey Lord's dreadful dungeon?
Yes? Then perhaps you'll be the one to enter the caves of the sacred mountain and retrieve the Firestaff from the evil Lord Chaos. To succeed, you must assemble a band of four champions and lead them in fierce battles against the terrible Dark Lord who now rules your master's dungeon.
And if you fail? At best, you'll meet your ghastly end in the dungeon's wretched catacombs, like hundreds of brave adventurers who went before you. Far worse, you might become a captive "trophy" of the evil Lord Chaos, suspended forever in the haunting mirrors of the Hall of Champions.

Duke Hector Barrik, besieged in his castle by a vicious goblin army, is musing over his demise. "Let the bards praise our courage," he says just as battle is about to be joined. Suddenly, the earth trembles and the sky rips open. Man and goblin alike are sucked into a bottomless void. When everyone's senses return to normal, they find that the castle, its folk, and the goblins have all been transported to the bottom of a deep and wide valley surrounded on all sides by impossibly high cliffs. The Duke decides to act before the goblins recover, and sends for four of his best people to scout their new home. "The gods have given us a second chance," he tells them. "Serve me well, bring us allies, and you will be richly rewarded." Based on the popular role-playing game created by Gary Gygax.

An Ultima-style RPG set within the now-famous fantasy game. No, not really - it's actually a better-than-average Japanese RPG retooled with AD&D graphics and names. Not bad, but not great, either - and not worth the trouble considering that Ultima 7 is a far better game and available for the Genesis as well.

In the early 1990s, a mysterious dark shadow covered a small country town in rural America. A young married couple vanished from their house without a trace. The man's name was George, the woman's name was Maria. Two years passed, and George suddenly returned. He never spoke to anyone about what he had experienced. Instead, he lead a solitary life and began an odd study, all by himself. His wife never returned.

Eighty years have passed since then. You play the role of a young boy who lives together in a small town together with his parents and his two sisters. One day, something strange happens: the house seems to be possessed by a poltergeist. Things start attacking house inhabitants. The boy's father advises him to talk to his grandfather and to learn how to use psychic powers in order to discover the reason behind the strange poltergeist. On his journey, the boy meets three other children: a quiet girl who lives together with her mother, a young genius who isn't accepted by his classmates, and a boy who joined a gang, hoping for revenge. The four heroes will explore the world and find out the connection between the strange events of today and the mystery of the past.

Closely related to the SNES game EarthBound, "Mother" is an unusual console-style RPG set in modern times. Combat system is similar to Dragon Warrior: you meet random enemies and bosses, and fight them in turn-based combat viewed from first-person perspective. Instead of magic, your characters can use special psychic powers called PSI.

Equinox is a cross between an adventure game, a RPG, and a puzzle game. Your goal as an Arabian boy is to weave your way through a complex maze of caves beneath a fantasy world. While in the caves, you have to accumulate tokens and keys to open doors to finally get to a boss. Most of the tokens are obtained from slaying Pac-Man-like ghosts and other bizarre creatures that have it in for you. Gathering keys usually requires well planned jumps and pushing objects around to provide safe places to step. To help you with these tasks, you will gather magic spells that can be used to heal, put the enemy in slow motion, and more. Wandering above-group will see you engage in random fighting while crossing vast amounts of land to get to new areas.

Equinox is complemented by an eerie soundtrack and simple, but fitting sounds. This is one of the first SNES games to use a diagonal 3D perspective, and executes it wonderfully with superb graphics for a cart. This is a fair game, but often frustratingly difficult to pass certain dungeons. Equinox will allow you to save your game frequently, which is vital since it can take hours to complete a single level. Equinox has a feel to it like no other game and will likely keep you coming back for quite a while.

You play the role of the warrior Sadler in this fantasy RPG set amid warring desert kingdoms. You were the one to bring peace the first time war erupted in the land, and now you must restore peace once again.

This is no Phantasy Star, and the tiny game graphics are irritating, but the overall game itself is decent enough if your an RPG fan.

You play your pick of three brothers who sets out on a quest at the request of his village mayor to recover a sacred talisman. Ported from the classic Amiga RPG.

One of the Amiga's better-known RPGs, the Genesis port does not have that silly manual-check copy-protection scheme, thank God. The graphics show their age rather badly and some might find the organ music irritating, but keep in mind this was the title that seems to have caused Lord British to retool the latter releases in the Ultima series of fantasy RPGs.

It was a stormy night. Cold wind raged, and rain poured over the country. The wise men understood at once: the prophecy has become reality. The spell of the Legendary Sword was lifted...

Fast-forward to three months later. You are a nameless young adventurer, looking for some action. Your first task is... you guessed it, to rescue a princess. After the king gives you this assignment, you are free to roam about the world, visiting dangerous caves and towers, and fulfilling ancient prophecies..

"Faria" is a combination of console-style RPG exploration and character development (like in Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest) with real-time battles. On the world map, you are randomly attacked by enemies, and have to eliminate them running around the battle field and attacking them physically or casting spells. In the complex, maze-like towers the enemies appear everywhere. There is also a good deal of puzzles to solve in the dungeons.

Feda is a tactical role playing game. Much like Shining Force there are two forms of gameplay: exploration and battles. During the exploration stage you can explore towns and other locations and visit shops and houses. While on the other world map, the game becomes turn based and you can move to an adjacent area or were the enemy units will do the same afterwards. Battles are activated when the player and an enemy unit occupy the same area or in scripted event.
Depending on which character the player uses to act, the scene shows him in full picture or just a part of the character. Unlike in Shining Force where the player always just sees his character from behind and the enemy in front of him.

Battles take place on a square grid where each unit occupies a single square. Battle is turn-based where during a character's turn, they can move a certain amount of squares, they may then perform an action such as attack or use items. When an attack action is used it goes into a fight animation and tells the player how much damage was given/received.

Hironobu Sakaguchi's "Final Fantasy"... the first of one of longest role-playing game series known to mankind. "Final Fantasy" is the game for the NES console that started it all.

The world is veiled in darkness. Winds don't blow, the seas are stormy, and the earth rots. All people can hope for is that the ancient prophecy will be finally fulfilled. "When the world is veiled in darkness, four warriors will come..." And indeed, they come - the four characters you have previously chosen. Their first quest is to free a princess from the evil Garland.

"Final Fantasy" uses a turn-based combat. The enemies wait until your entire party have performed the moves, and the ATB (active-time battle) system is not used. You can buy weapons and rest in the towns, and the world map is populated by monsters, with which you will be engaged in random fights.

Before the game starts, you choose four characters from six different classes: Fighter, Thief, Blue Belt, White Mage, Red Mage, and Black Mage. Which four classes you choose for your character is entire up to you. You also give the characters names.

The Paramekian Empire decided to take over the world. Its soldiers and Dark Knights persecute innocent people, burn whole villages, hunt down brave warriors. Now Phin, the homeland of the four heroes, has been destroyed by the evil empire. Only four young warriors could escape, three men and one girl. On their way to a neighbor town Altea, they were attacked by the Dark Knights. Three of them were brought safely to Altea by the order of the rebel army. But one has not yet been found...

This second installment of the glorious series features turn-based combat, without using the later ATB (active time battle) system. You choose the four user of your party before the game starts. However, while the original Final Fantasy allows you to choose between six character classes, here the game chooses them for you. You can only give names for the four heroes.

The kingdom of Baron has undergone a significant change recently; the province has become the first in the world to create airships that make global travel a simple accomplishment, and has thus immediately established itself as one of the world's primary powers. But as the adage goes, absolute power corrupts absolutely, and as of late the king of Baron has been making moves to ensure his power will remain absolute in the years to come. To that effect, he has sent his minions out into the world, scavenging for the mysterious and potent elemental crystals for some dark and as-of-yet unrevealed end.

The Red Wings are the kingdom's elite fighters, handlers of Baron's airship fleets and the most trusted of the king's subjects. At their lead is Cecil, an orphan and now the Dark Knight of Baron, by request of the king, the man who took him in. With the airships, they have looted and burned towns, killed innocent subjects of other lands, and most recently stolen the crystal of water from the helpless town of Mysidia. Cecil, like any good soldier, has been able to justify these actions under the classification of "just following orders"... until now. Even though he wears the armor and wields the sword of the Dark Knight, he is not heartless, and his actions weigh heavily on his conscience. But the king has been kind to him, so he will not abdicate his position or remove the mantle of Dark Knight that he loathes so much.

This is the setup of Final Fantasy II (known as Final Fantasy IV in Japan), the first of the trio of Final Fantasy games released on Nintendo's 16-bit platform. With Final Fantasy II, Square Soft finally began establishing a name for itself in the U.S. While it resembled its 8-bit predecessor in many ways, there were plenty of new additions to the Final Fantasy world for fans on both sides of the Pacific.

The storyline, hinted at above, takes plenty of twists and turns in various directions, always focusing mainly on the trials and tribulations of Cecil but branching out to include the tales of many characters. You can have up to five user in your party at one time, although unlike later entries in the Final Fantasy canon, you don't control who you have or when you have them; the whims of the story dictate that. Each character is presented at a different point in the game, and all have a goal to accomplish, adding more subtext to the overall story.

The quest itself takes place on a global scale, and this particular unnamed world boasts all manner of environments, from swamps to deserts to plains, as well as a wide host of caves, castles, and other assorted dens of evil for brave adventurers to wander around, slowly building experience until they can beat the area's boss and head on to the next bit of storyline. The adventure involves dwarfs, giant airships, an ancient evil, and even an excursion to the moon before all is said and done.

In a remote village of Ur, four orphan boys were raised by the priest Topapa. Once, the Crystal of Wind, guarded by the people of Ur, sank deep into the earth. The four boys decided to retrieve it from there and went down into an underground cave. But when they found the crystal, it spoke to them and from its words they understood they were chosen for a much more important and world-embracing mission...

"Final Fantasy 3" is the third Final Fantasy game for the NES platform. It is the last Final Fantasy game that does not use the ATB (active time battle) system (until it was removed again in "Final Fantasy X"). The turn-based battle engine has been improved: if the enemy is defeated, the next character will automatically switch to another enemy, and not hit the air, like in the previous two games. Before the game begins, you give names to the four boys, which look the same (only in different colors) and belong all to the same class. Some minor issues were slightly changed to resemble more the classical Final Fantasy look (such as the menu layout etc.).

A world once vibrant with the power of magic has plunged into an industrial age, one that has raped the countrysides, disempowered its people, and brought tremendous conflict that has touched every corner of the globe. All the lands are now governed by a corrupt empire, headed by Emperor Gestahl, who uses powerful machines to keep the world at bay.

There is also another weapon, one far more powerful than any conventional powers: a young girl named Terra whose blood is half of the mysterious creatures known as Espers, the last remnants of that magical time so long ago. They have turned her into a biological weapon with their mind-controlling slave crown.

But Terra will slip free of the Empire's grasp and meet up with a young rogue named Locke, a man living with the pain of a lost love who he could not help. Together they will begin an epic journey that will stretch across the land, perhaps even bringing it to its end. But the ultimate question is whether or not the powerful Empire is really the most dangerous threat to the heroes and the world, or if somehow there is a force even more powerful, chaotic, and deadly that is pulling the puppet strings from behind the veil.

So begins Final Fantasy III, known as Final Fantasy VI in Japan, the last domestic Final Fantasy to appear on the Super NES. Final Fantasy III is a role-playing game which spans the course of several years and incorporates sixteen different characters for you to play, each with his or her own back-story and plot. These episodes are introduced into the story as players achieve certain milestones.

The game boasts hours of gameplay and many different locations to explore. Familiar Final Fantasy faces and items make an appearance during the course of the game, from Chocobos and Mogs to airships, masamunes, and other objects. Most of the characters have at least one different and unique skill, such as the ability to do combo power moves, emulate other animals, and capture and summon the powerful Espers hidden around the world, from Bahamut to Ragnarok.

Final Fantasy III also has a magic system similar to other Final Fantasy titles, with basics such as Fire, Ice, Bio, Warp, plus a host of spells new to the franchise. It additionally features two different versions of the same world, before and after a war: The World of Balance and The World of Ruin. Final Fantasy III includes battery backup that allows players to save three different games on the same cartridge.
