Directional Pad moves lead character north, south, east, west, and diagonally
A listen to villagers
X call up sub screen for playing options
L same effect as pressing the A button repeatedly
BATTLE
Directional Pad move cursor so that it highlights the icons of choice
A select highlighted option
B go back one step so you can re-think your strategy
X bring up information on the highlighted item, weapon, or spell
L holding this button performs the same function as hitting A quickly in succession
R if current weapon or spell can hit multiple enemies, R will select all targets
DUNGEONS
Directional Pad move lead character, and the curser when appropriate
Select brings up special skills menu
A choose highlighted icon or engage in battle with an enemy
B swing sword of lead character
X bring up sub screen when you are not fighting monsters
Y use special skills
L rapid use of A button function
R turns character that is under your control
SUB SCREEN
Directional Pad move cursor to various sub screen icons
A select highlighted icon
B back up one step and cancel your selection
X bring up information on currently selected option
L scroll up through the list of options
