10-Yard Fight » NES » Discuss » Plays: 1478  1*

American Football, the intense game where muscle, brains, and passion collide. Whether playing yourself, or just watching others, you can't help but get into the 10-yard fight!

Offense tries to advance as far as they can towards the goal line. However, defense is ready to stop you with as many as 183 starting formations and as many as 133,407 plays they're trying to get yardage and win the game too! Size up each play slyly, yet quickly, and make a charge for the goal line! The game gradually gets harder as you get better. You start playing high school, then college, then pro, then play off, and finally Super Bowl level football.

Come up with game-winning strategies and nice moves for both offense and defense. So get on the gridiron and fight, fight, fight!

In 1943, our main fleet began an intense battle off the coast of Midway Islands.

Help our fleet defeat the enemy.

The NES version varies from the arcade version somewhat, introducing the gradual improvement of the player's plane by several "augmenting" power-ups that never go away.  These include the plane's offensive and defensive powers, the energy level, its special weapons and their durations.  This somewhat alters the game balance and a different tactic is required to survive the game.  For example, initially very few weapons are made available; more can be attained from power-ups by putting statistic points into "special weapons ability".  Likewise, there are statistics for offensive ability, defensive ability, total energy, and special weapon time limit.  The statistics modify the rates of change for the energy reserve, damage inflicted, and special weapon time limit.

After hundreds of years of chaos, mankind has finally emerged from the ruins of nuclear war.  This world of the distant future has once again flourished under the guidance of the Great King, who harnessed the power of the 8 Eyes to rebuild the planet.

These strange jewels of power were formed at the eyes, or centers, of the eight nuclear explosions which nearly destroyed the Earth.  In the wrong hands, the 8 Eyes could cause untold destruction... and now, they have been seized by the Great King's eight Dukes, in a desperate bid to gain control of the world for themselves.  They have banished the King to the nuclear wastelands, and already their squabbling threatens to plunge the world into war once again!

The task of retrieving the 8 Eyes falls to you, Orin the Falconer, the bravest and mightiest of the King's Guardsmen.  With your fighting falcon, Cutrus, you must penetrate each of the eight Dukes' castles.  There you will face the Dukes' soldiers, and battle strange nuclear mutants such as living skeletons, giant wasps, and mud men.  You must defeat the monstrous Boss of each castle to retrieve the Jewel of Power he guards.

Then, to complete your quest, return the 8 Eyes to the Altar of Peace to await the return of the Great King, so that he may finish the rebuilding of Earth.  Your reward will be the eternal gratitude of all mankind!

AD&D Dragon Strike » NES » Discuss » Plays: 346

The game is set in Krynn, world of the Dragonlance saga, during the War of the Lance.  DragonStrike combined elements of computer role-playing games and flight simulators.  The player character is a knight who flies on the back of a metallic dragon equipped with a lance and various magic items (among other things a magic orb that acts as a radar in the game).  The player's dragon can use its recharging magical breath to attack and can also attack with its claws if the dragon passes closely above enemies.  Opponents in the game include evil dragons with and without riders and other flying monsters such as manticores and beholders.  Flying too close to the ground is another hazard for the player as enemy archers are present in some areas.

Completing successful missions provides the character with more hit points and the opportunity to obtain a more powerful dragon.  Depending on what dragon the player chooses (between a bronze, a silver and a gold dragon) the ending and missions become slightly different.  Critically, it was a failure.

AD&D Heroes of the Lance » NES » Discuss » Plays: 455

The game is based on the first Dragonlance campaign module, Dragons of Despair, and the first Dragonlance novel Dragons of Autumn Twilight.  It focuses on the journey of eight heroes through the ruined city of Xak Tsaroth, where they must face the ancient dragon Khisanth and retrieve the relic, Disks of Mishakal.

While Heroes of the Lance is a faithful representation of the books it is based on, it was a departure from the usual RPG style of most Dungeons & Dragons games, and many players lamented its difficult game play interface which consists of using one character at a time in horizontally-scrolling fighting.  Each character has different types of attacks and spells making them more suited to fighting different enemies but they merely act as "lives" for the player as in more traditional fighting games, removing one of the main strategies of role-playing games from the game.

Advanced Dungeons and Dragons: Pool of Radiance is a role-playing game that was first released in 1988 for the computer, under the name of Pool of Radiance, and ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1992.  It utilized the Gold Box engine introduced by its 1988 version and later improved upon in Forgotten Realms Unlimited Adventures.  The game (and the engine) features two different modes: first person perspective for NPC interactions and exploring and a more strategy-board based combat display, where characters and enemies are represented by small icons. Combat is turn-based and requires maneuvering close to your foe for close range attacks.

The Addams Family is a platform game based on the characters and settings from the movie (which, in turn, is based on the famous 1960's television series).

The game takes place towards the end of the movie: the Addams Family has been evicted from their home by a court order issued by a backstabbing attorney (there's one for the books), Tully Alford. Even worse, the other Addamses: Morticia, Pugsley, Wednesday, Granny and Lurch have gone missing.

As Gomez, you must tour the Addams mansion in search of your lost family, battling out mysterious monsters and evading traps, and eventually face your nemesis, Tully.

[NOTE: Captain Comic is the most popular name for this game, but on the title screen and in the manual it is called "The Adventures of Captain Comic" and on the manual cover and the cartridge itself is called "Captain Comic The Adventure."]

The elders of Osmic had come in full regalia, feathers and banners and the heavy gold chains of office, bet the formal procession of leaders had not carried the hereditary badges of office - the Crown of the Ages, the Mystical Gems of Lascorbanos of the Thousand Coins of Tenure.  These had been stolen, most wickedly purloined, in an attempt to jeopardize the forthcoming festivities of the Trimillenial and were now reputedly hidden on the planet Tambi.

So they came to you - Captain Comic, galactic hero, righter of wrongs, and all around nice guy.  It was most gratifying-ignore the rumor that they had first gone to Orion O'Brian, that mercenary thug, and he had turned them down, calling the job "insanely dangerous" and saying the entire planet of Tambi, from its endless blue lakes to its impossibly blue moon, had not one cubic centimeter where a person could feel safe - nor a single benign life form.  Tambi was a land of surprises - all bad.

Well, you're on the job now.  Using your keen wits and well-honed reflexes, you must traverse the ever-changing and treacherous environs of Tambi and return the treasures of Osmic in time for the Trimillenial celebrations.  Succeed, and you will be honored as a hero once more; fail, and three thousand years of galactic peace and prosperity crumble to comic - uh - cosmic trust.
